LOL! Not that this price didn't get to questionable people yet or people getting preferred for strange reasons but I really didn't see that one coming...
awarded it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".
I usually don't make such comments but - so in other words he gets one because he's the first president with a dark skin color??? At least I know of no "extraordinary efforts" making him the Mr. Peace of the year (he even hasn't been president for that long)...
Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future
So that's the argumentation? I mean with those words? I then vote for Hitler getting one post mortem too - hell he really gave people something to believe in and hope for a better future making Obama's efforts look like child's work...

I think they gave him the prize so that the whole world would agree in a giant "WTF", therefore promoting mutual understanding between populations.

... or maybe they were simply running out of prominent candidates, you know, those political refugees are running out of fashion nowdays.

You probably don't follow politics closely, he got it for massive nuclear disarmament effort he is mounting.

True there are no results yet, but even trying this is courageous.

so if ther was any hope his efforts could lead to somethign, it would make sense to wait for actual success, and then give him the prize.. no?

How was any of this Obama's effort? Things like that have been negotiated for decades and it all started in 1991 where Gorbatschow and Bush signed a bilateral agreement. He just "put his signature" under something debated and planned by lots and lots of people for years and now it's "his effort"?

Don't forget there were far worse laureates of this prize - like Arafat.

Obama's policy led to easing lots of tension (after discontinuing Bush policy):

- Russia has agreed on reduction of strategic missiles to just 1000..

- Russia will remove its tactical missiles from Kalaningrad since Obama changed missile defense system.

- Iran tension has decreased significantly, Iran will ship its enriched Uranium to Russia for reprocessing which will make it useless for nuclear weapons

He is also first president to declare that final aim is to have no nuclear weapons (afaik)

There is also Obama started major effort for complete ban of nuclear tests (which will stop development of new weapons).

Experiments are atm going on between Russia and USA to develop monitoring network and inspection regime to ensure this without breaking state secrets.

Yeah - I said the same thing in the opening post but unlike e.g. Arafat there exists no real argumentation (how one sided they may be) as to why he actually got it. Not that I care too much about it but giving someone a noble price because he might do something good in the future is like crossing the next frontier of nonsense...
Licho wrote:Obama's policy led to easing lots of tension (after discontinuing Bush policy):
But he didn't do it as an act of generosity or with peace in mind - the whole concept was just one sided in the first place destroying lots of the balance of the nuclear weapons concept and so lead to much criticism, resistance and even conflict. Continuing that would have been stubborn...

Might be true although at least the concept for nuclear disarmament has alway been there. Still did he say that because he wants that or because it right now fits into the politics of his party / the politics of other countries who support that too nowadays?

LOL.
well if this guy could get the nobel peace prize http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasser_Arafat
Than i guess anyone can.

Seriously though nobel prizes should be given after a long time has passed to be able to better judge if indeed the person's actions contributed to world peace...
Obama is in office what?less than a year?
Guess bowing to Muslim monarchs that oppress their people and sucking the dicks of dictatorships around the world is worth something...

You can only spread western culture by waging war.
look at the UK.
The UK managed to spread western cultural values to huge parts of the world. How?by force.
You don't spread western cultural values, like the freedom of speech for example, by being a pacifistic spineless slime.
If obama is the leader of the free world than the future aint bright.

Conquer,subjugate,influence,leave.
USA needs to kick some ass japan style.
Before USA japan was a totalitarian country ruled by a single person and did horrible things in territories it took over.
After the USA?A peaceful, democratic prospering country...
Democracies need to step up and grow some balls.

If you live in a democratic country that hasn't kicked the ass of some failing country in the last 10 years, call your representatives right away.

CA is being considered for nobel peace prize for the ongoing efforts toward the disarmament of D-Gun weapons. Thanks to negotiations on both sides, currently Arm and Core commanders do not start out with them and must morph into D-Gun Commander at a cost so there is progress. There was a small incident where Core began outfitting D-Guns on Goliaths. Luckily it was quickly resolved using diplomatic means. Here's to a D-Gun free world. Peace on Earth.

I'm not in the loop but wouldn't that actually work against development of energy sources, i.e. thermonuclear fusion? Considering that the technology is still very new (relatively speaking) with more potential than most would give it credit for, i do not see that policy a very good one as weapons change. You can more easily go from effective nuclear weaponry to effective weaponry using megabombasticularorwhatevershit than find a new energy source on that scale.

It's about testing the weapons. That has no influence for power creating applications as keeping something extremely controlled and as wished is totally different from just igniting a massive chain reaction and that's it...

Yeah i got that yet i still don't see how you can effectively remove nuclear weapons tests if you allow nuclear energy tests as the two are so linked it practically impossible. For example, from what i know, to advance thermonuclear power / nuclear fusion power, large scale tests would have to be carried out (read about nuclear fusion if you don't already know what type of "tests" have been successful at that field or just want to know more). To differentiate these tests from actual weapon tests would need a lot of work and in reality, that kind of checkup is easily bypassed.

In other words, he showed up to work instead of spending 2/3 of his term on vacation, and then didn't bomb anyone?

Obama does more for world peace by doing nothing than bush ever did.

Agreeing to back down slightly from the missile shield thing in Europe? Good work, that's called playing the game. Vlad knows the missile defenses would've had no effect against them, but his citizens demand he appear outraged, so he appears outraged, so Obama says "ok, I will stop, but actually just relocate them somewhere more effective and out of sight, rather than just leaving them there to piss you off."
