Where do you buy your games from?

Post by Caydr »

Just out of curiosity, where do you buy your games from and for what reason?

Steam? Impulse? D2D? Retail? The Pirate Bay?

Also how many digital-distribution games have you bought, roughly?
(Hint, you can check your games list for a list of your games)
(Hint, do not include your TPB purchases in this list)

What would make you more willing to get games digital, and what would make you more likely to want a boxed copy?

If you have a console, does the risk of losing all your purchases along with your console (due to obsolescence, breakdown, Sony declaring purchases no be incompatible with PS4 as a cost-saving measure, etc)

I dont get why companies force you to use their ENTERPRISE GRADE DRM-CERTIFIED DIGITAL CONTENT-CREATOR CONTENT-DISTRIBUTION ARCHITECTURE TEGHNOLOGY instead of just presenting you with a ~100byte file after you pay. Suggested contents:

Code: Select all

------
PRODUCT KEY: 1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234
------
Thank you for purchasing $NAME, you are now legally allowed to download $NAME fron wherever hint:$TPB_LINKS
Oh right it is so they can sell for store-price and whine about digital distribution being expensive.

And even if i gave in and actually got games from steam they would be useless once steam servers shut down.

Usually, here in the U.S., Steam is cheaper than a store, sometimes by a lot.

I understand it isn't that way in Europe, but that's not VaLVe's fault, per se- there are legal reasons, IIRC. And Steam games generally work just fine even if you don't log into Steam, at least for single-player.

And Steam's delivery bandwidth is second-to-none, imo, especially for really big releases. I'm not saying they're perfect, but meh, they're certainly the best in that market atm.

I've got about 35 games on steam, which is my only source of legal games aside from the occasional gift card. I started using steam a while after it's original release so I've been fairly happy with it.

I've bought 5 games on steam. Another 15 or so in store (when I didnt know about pirating or steam). The only game I have bough recently was Cod4, not because I pirate much, but because of school workload.

I buy my games through the pirate bay and other similar online stores.
They have the best prices.
When i actually play a good game i buy it though...which is about 1% of all the games i try.

Lol Otherside got suckered into buying Warrior Kings!

I buy console games second hand from a local store, barely ever buy PC games; Spring, Wesnoth, Tekken, Soul Cal and a bit of free to play MMORPG eats enough of my free time as it is...

Whatever has a good offer. Sometimes retail (preferrably not at GameStop), sometimes download (WiiWare, XBLA, Steam).

I used to have a few game shelves like that once, now they're "all my other crap" shelves and my game boxes are now being used in another life to wipe someone's ass or hold their cereal. Actually it could be both simultaneously now that I think of it.

Most of my games I've purchased through thrift stores and garage sales, I've always been held back financially, so I have a quite large collection of games from the 2600 to the SNES, and relatively few from the past decade.

When I buy new games, I usually buy them through Steam. However, of late my connection has been rather poor, leading to some physical purchases.

i bought an live for speed S2 license.
you only get an unlock code and nothing else, the full content is already in the demo download.
Still I did this because imo its the best racing simulation there is and there is no real alternative.
Also, you can unlock your account as often as you want (well, 3 times per week or something) so the license is handled in the most ungay mode possible.

To be honest, there are so many cool freeware games, I can not be assed to spend money on a commercial game just because its new or something.

Steam for online games (as in keys) and certain other means for everything else which isn't worth the money in the first place

WoW boxes (like most MMORPG boxes) come with x amount of monthly subscription (like 3 months), plus some other bullshit they throw on to intice you to buy in a store.
