I haven't run Spring for a while so I will catalog my experience:
Phase one, installation... as it turned out... I couldn't connect to the server required to download SpringDownloader.exe and looked like it had locked up, so I canceled it... I have two 1024x768 monitors so I chose 2048x768 (duel-screen) from the settings dialog.
Good thing I'm not a moron because having to install .NET to successfully install all of the options in the installer would have been scary.
(Side note, I Concurrently am installing impulse so I can install GalCivII... it made me install a new version of IE and a NEWER version of .NET)
To be continued...

Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
First things first, did you use the official spring installer or one of the 5 3rd-party installers?
Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
I went to: http://springrts.com/wiki/Download Saw link marked "Click here to download" which lead to http://sourceforge.net/projects/springr ... e/download
Looks like I am unable to reach caspring.org right now, I'm resolving [65.49.60.83] and getting replies to my ping... any guesses?
Regardless, not a stellar first impression... maybe a count-down to time out and final page "failed to do X please go here to fix this issue" or something... all in all relatively passable for a FOSS game.

caspring.org, http://files.caspring.org/caupdater/Spr ... loader.exe and http://sourceforge.net/projects/springr ... e/download all work for me.
To download spring (the engine) you do not need the springdownloader, its for mods, maps, widgets etc.
Its not really needed to play, for example I only use it to get CA versions, everything else I download by browser.

Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
i thought id explain that because your first post made no sense to me and you seemed confused.
Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
Phase two, ran the Spring Battleroom link on my desktop... got an error saying it couldn't run SPringdownloader (there was a 0 kb file with the correct name in my install directory)... since I know what I'm doing I downloaded said file and dropped it into my install folder... went to try to join a game, it downloaded a mod file without me asking then downloaded a map file without me asking...sweet... took like 10 seconds too so that was awesome...
then I realized it was too late to play an MP game so decided to run single-player... the interface is awesome now... its like I'm playing a real game...
Anyways, checked my campaign and missions buttons and they were empty for the selected mod (BA 7.01 I think) and then I went to start a new game... added the first AI on the list... "AAI"... got in game, picked a start location (even though I had specified fixed start locations) and after clicking ready the program crashed...
Mapname=Kappa_Basin.smf;
Maphash=2110682822;
GameType=Balanced Annihilation V7.01;
ModHash=-833778204;
http://pastebin.com/f21025014
GalCivII has been crashing whenever I start a new game too... so its entirely probable its my OS or hardware that's to blame.

Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
i was amazed by the spring.exe base interface, and it worked with no ai for me, havent checked with ais. It does finally look like a game.
Re: Fresh Eyes Blog
If AAI's gonna crash unless the mod supports it (by writing a config file) then we should stop shipping AAI in the default install and start bundling it with mods.
