If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
If the PS3 got backwards-compatibility again, would you consider buying one?
Personally, I'm getting to the point where I might consider buying a new console. The PS3 has blu-ray (which is starting to become relevant), mulitplayer is free, the price has dropped, and the new slim model is finally smaller than the TV I'd be hooking it up to. There aren't a lot of good PS3 games that aren't available for PC, but almost no PS2 games are available for PC. So it would be, in my case, the last bit of extra value that would justify buying a game console when I already have a computer that's twice as powerful.
X360 is out of the question because almost all its multiplayer functions requires a subscription, which I don't like. It also lacks the blu-ray playback, and of course, I don't like 1/3 odds of needing a replacement or perhaps multiple replacements.
Basically here's the thing: I hesitate to continue buying DVDs when a superior format is available. Blu-ray has been very slow taking off but there's no sense in being stubborn and just refusing to buy them. They're a better product, even if the difference is barely noticeable or unimportant on most titles.

Both of my roommates have ps3s and several dozen games. The games suck except for little big planet which is merely frustrating. We have a 360 and we play it roughly a hundred times more.

Absolutely. I missed the PS2 generation - I want to get Ico and Shadow of the Colossus and the Katamari games... but at the same time, I don't want to have to buy a dead-end console.
If Sony released backwards-compat as an expansion module for the PS3 (like the RAM upgrade on the N64), I'd pick one up in a second.

Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
To be honest it depends on if there are games you want to play on the ps3. I have a 50+ inch bravia and really never saw the point of blueray. I don't know, high def is over-rated to me, my laptop has a higher resolution. The new ps3 is not backwards compatible, there is a rumor about them possibly putting some of the old games on a sort of marketplace where you can get them and play them but there is no guarantee that you will be able to get the games you want from that.
As far as finding replacements... the WII occasionally would ship busted. Mine stopped reading disks in the first 2 times of usage. I had to ship it back to Nintendo and by the time I got it back, I didn't care anymore. I only recently picked up playing it because of some gundam games I imported from japan. I have heard there were issues from time to time with ps3s and their blue ray players but it was IIRC the first run of them.

Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
I have a PS3 and I can tell you I was majorly pissed off at Sony for bot including PS2 support in my model... but I needed a blue-ray player and at the time the PS3 cost about 20% more then a stand-alone bluray player so I didn't return it in hopes it may eventually have good games (there are some good ones on the Playstation Network, and rock-band, rock-band 2 are just as good as their 360 counterparts)... anyway... if they add back in REAL PS2 software support (which is possible given the kind of computer I've seen PS2 emulators running on) I would be able to take the CEO of SOA off of my "People to kill if killing ever becomes legal" list.
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
smoth, 720p looks much crisper than 480p/i when directly compared... 720p vs 1080p (I've compared about a foot away from a 23" monitor) would probably only show up on a seriously large screen (i.e. over 80-120")
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
when directly compared... if I have my glasses off, I don't see the difference. If I am watching tv, I am curled up on the sofa with the gf.
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
if you have 20/20 vision, 1080p will still look totally crisp at about 6.5' from a 50" screen
if you're 10' from the screen, you won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p *even if you have perfect vision*
since my monitor is close and I have pretty good eyesight, I would theoretically require similar picture quality to an 80" screen at 6.5'... so 1080p is noticeable, though 720p upscaled still looks very good (reference: THX recommendations for video resolution vs screen size and personal observation)

Is that aliased or anti-aliased graphics?aegis wrote:if you have 20/20 vision, 1080p will still look totally crisp at about 6.5' from a 50" screen

Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
it matters in gaming, don't get me wrong.
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
was just basic upscaling with the video quality comparison
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
doesn't matter quite so much when you consider the fact that about 3/4 of the games for the PS3 don't even support 1080psmoth wrote:it matters in gaming, don't get me wrong.

if ps3 can integrate this for me, consider my wallet opened.smoth wrote:curled up on the sofa with the gf.

I think that depends on how big Smoth's sofa is, and their policy on guests, rather than your wallet.KaiserJ wrote:if ps3 can integrate this for me, consider my wallet opened.smoth wrote:curled up on the sofa with the gf.
Re: If the PS3 got backwards compatibility again would you buy?
resolution takes a backseat when theres a cutlery drawers' worth of spooning going on
i will give smoth a french braid like ice cube

I regret buying the PS2 for backwards compatibility, I don't think I'll make the same mistake twice.
