hmm, the joystick vs mouse "which is moar skillz" debate

to me, im more comfortable with a mouse... im used to playing fps games with really high sensitivity settings so i can turn on a dime... even the highest sensitivity setting on halo seems sluggish to me.

conversely, i can't aim worth shit in halo, whereas with games like CSS and UrT i've got quite good aim and can put a slug in their mug first shot no trouble at all.

i often game with my friend; he generally plays both console and PC FPS games with a very low sensitivity; he's not the greatest player but he's quite consistent and is very effective with the sniper in halo.

my reflexes are still valid; i'm pretty quick when it comes to close quarters combat; i rarely lose a sword duel.

(should note... im aware you can play halo w/ a mouse on the PC version, im just sort of talking about my recent experiences of H3 on Xbox 360 with my experiences playing PC FPS)

eventually, as console gaming sucks up more and more of the market, i think we'll start to see things like a mouse and keyboard being available for the 360 and ps3 as an alternative control device; and maybe somewhere down the road we'll see the very best mouse FPSer head to head against the very best joystick FPSer (my money is on the mouse, but i guess it all comes down to just being used to the control device)

wesnoth... the poker example is a good one; its not so much about being able to win as a surety but about putting yourself in the best possible position to win... once you get to the point where you are okay with losing some of your troops, then the game starts to become very enjoyable.

anyone up for perhaps organizing a spring community game of 3v3 or something?

A spring community game sounds fun. Count me in. I haven't played it in a while, and I'm not particularly good, but its quite fun.

Actually, I'm pretty bad. I'm one of those people who ragequit or reload when their levelled unit dies in some infinitesimally unlikely manner. I eventually end up coming back for some reason though... can't quite put my finger on it.

The "oh fark, I just lost a high-level expensive unit to a wuss" effect is a staple of TBS games going back to Civilizations. Why should Wesnoth be any different?

Who the hell never lost a tank to a pikeman in Civ?

I'm not saying it *should* be different. I'm just saying that in Wesnoth is particularly infuriating for some reason.

The units feel much more personal than just some grunt you send off to die, especially when they've levelled up. I mean, they have names and traits and everything! :P

I can see that. I played a lot of Civilizations Revolutions on the DS, where you can get a tonne of special powers from levelling up, and so in that game the "pikeman kills my immortal tank" effect was particularly infuriating... but it happened all too often, since after you get pikemen the game becomes very porc-y.

My computer is in a terrible state, I need to reinstall one operating system or another, I'll most likely end up dual booting stripped XP/ubuntu, I'm just being lazy.
