Cement factory

Post by Gota »

Some company is about to build a cement factory Near my neighborhood.
There is now a group of people from my neighborhood that are fighting this evil.
They have been giving out leaflets inviting as many people as possible to come and support the anti factory group in a meeting with the city's council and the mayor.

Ok springers,Should i lift my butt and go there to help fight the cement factory or should i play some more spring?

Lower land value is the only thing on that list I would care about. I'd fight it just based on property values going down.

Why would you allow any one of the probable dozens of stores which represent a net negative impact on the environment through their sales of products generated and distributed through inefficient means and yet not allow a facility which merely doesn't hide a common destructive manner? Seems terribly superficial to me.

I don't really care what you do, but if you're asking on this forum, you probably want to sit around and play more Spring

Honestly, if I were in that situation, I'd be cheering "yay, some actual work is appearing in my neighborhood! Maybe my city won't turn into Detroit now!"

Cause it means trucks of cement every day,air pollution from it,lower land value...
1. The manufacture of cement is usually heavily regulated, due to silicosis concerns. I would be surprised, if Isreali standards were a lot lower than in most First World countries- silicosis is a serious illness, and a sloppily-run cement factory is not a joke.

That said... are they actually making it, or just mixing it for delivery? Two really different things there.

2. On the trucks... do they intend to do something really stupid, like route the trucks through housing developments? Or just the usual thing for a plant of this type- location that's fairly near a highway, so they can deliver the cement quickly where it's needed?

The first would really lower property values, and be an eyesore and safety problem. The second, not so much.

3. On the land value question, it really depends. Who is building it, where are they building it, and what is that land being used for now?

Are they planning to run the trucks at all hours, or just during business hours? Are the trucks they're using really loud? Is the equipment very loud?

I guess the thing is, it's hard to know whether it's worth protesting, without more information. On the face of it... people need cement, to build buildings with. It's just a fact of life. If they're not using land that could be put to a much better purpose, and they aren't making cement, just mixing it and delivering it, and they aren't planning on having huge trucks drive past people's houses at all hours, it's not doing a lot of harm, and it's providing some employment and taxes.

That said, it's a big industrial business, that does involve big trucks, and people should want questions answered before it opens up near them. I would be surprised, though, if the developer hasn't already tried to come up with a good plan to address these things. A factory like this is a very expensive project, after all, and they've already gotten the land rights and permits, so they've already convinced your local government that it will be done correctly.
