Seriously though, it's a nice idea, but simply waiting for it is not helpful, get BSc and bring it that much closer.

I am a nerd, and I am here to ask you a question: Is a nerd not entitled to get high on tech?
No, says the man in Washington. It is against the law.
No, says the man in the Vatican. God doesen┬┤t run on advanced MPUs.
No, says the man in Moscow. In Soviet Russia, technological singularity needs to be planned.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Rapture.
A city where the nerd would not fear the laughter.
Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality.
Where I could have all the geek toys, free of fee.
With the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city, as well.

Soviet Russia? What you have a time machine? Russia is currently ran by the mafia republic of ex KGBers and is a democratic nation.

Argh loves him some Ian Bank's Culture novels. The faggotry abounds.
Never heard of him. Frankly, his books sound like they have serious problems in terms of their reasoning. And he's hardly original, frankly, although it certainly sounds like he took the entire premise to its absolute end point.

Frankly, I love how out of hand you are in dismissing one of this generation's greatest authors, without having read any of his work. Frankly.
for any pedants: I rate his "normal" fiction way higher than his SF

Analyzing an author's work based on its wikipedia arghicle is pretty amusing.

I find it even more amusing that individual passing characters from the texts, which only two of twenty university students I've asked have ever heard of, are considered article worthy.

Hey, his other stuff may be great. For all I know, he's the Dostoevsky of... whatever else he writes about. Sounds like dreadful sci-fi, though.

And I am perfectly willing to dismiss a book or books after skimming a precis that's something like 10 pages in length. Sorry, life's short, and even the author admitted that his premises were weak.

I mean... really... "do-gooder super-society sends super-heroes to slum the galaxy, uplifting the natives"...

If anyone out there is interested in watching magic gender switching (because this sort of thing can work in anime) he or she should watch the anime Maze:

Ian Bank's Culture books are alright, but alittle boring which is what I assume living in 'Culture' cities is like. Its like hitting God Mode and Infinite resources, sure its fun for awhile but after that its pretty goddamn boring to live in that mode forever.

Not the greatest, just good.
