How do you make a LAN game?

Post by BlueTemplar »

I have two computers (Vista & XP) connected via an RJ45 crossed cable.

What is the best way to make a LAN game? I see that it the new version you have the Direct Connect option, but there's no option for hosting a game. As far as I know you can do that using scripts, but I don't know the precise method to do this.

The wiki LAN page seems to be outdated...

And btw, where can I get the last version of TasClient? I kind of hate SpringLobby.

Host a lobby server on one of the computers, then host the actual game on the other computer like you would online.

Lobby server that you can find at the bottom of this page:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Download

When you run TASServer.jar (assuming you have Java Runtime Environment installed), it would seem as it does nothing, but you'll actually be able to connect to the localhost in TASClient.

Then connect to the IP address of this computer using TASClient as you would connect to a normal server.

I've used the same computer for the server and hosting.

You can find the latest TASClient here:

but it doesn't always work, so it's safer to do it the other way.

If that gave you a heart attack, prepare for a stroke...

Years ago I had walked into a Best Buy and saw particularly long ethernet cable. The package price was $50. Next to it I saw an identically branded cable of equal length only it was a crossover. Price: $100.
