I just looked into it and apparently it's really complex. First off, in the '80s rip-offs were pretty well accepted for toys, particularly ripping off internationally (since you're not competing with anybody local)... but as things went global, that started to fall over. FASA got away with the Robotech rips until they tried to sue Hasbro over stealing some FASA stuff for their Exo-Squad toys/cartoons. That's where Hasbro noticed they had Robotech licenses, and countersued. Both sides settled, and FASA decided to end their legal liability by gutting the Anime mechs from the game.

Now, apparently the current holder of the "Classic Battletech" wargame has finally gotten the legal issues cleared up with Macross-based mechs (the Battlemaster and other non-Macross anime-mechs are still out). They made a big announcement about it and all. So, it's surprising that Mechwarrior 5 is having this problem, since I assume their inclusion of such classic mechs was related to the success of Classic Battletech in getting these licenses.

which led to the end of fasa and and the buying of rights by wizkids and the re-releasing of older sourcebooks and TRO's with the old artwork in them redone. they look really silly such as:

I hate to correct you, but then reseen or project pheonix was actually not the same mechs, just mechs with similar load outs

Yes, but they were trying to phase out the old pictures. In the re-released they just cut them completely out.

I think that is all they can do otherwise harmony gold would fly up their ass. Harmony gold are some SOBS, it is amazing none of the macross mods get C&Ded.
