Big as in successful?Doomweaver wrote:If it was possible to have avatars on the models, TA Spring would become very big, very fast. Period.
Great!
Or du you mean big as in filesize?
Hm. If the avatar is a 256x256 DDS file, it will be 16kbyte...
Even if ALL players that were EVER online would have a custom avatar in the spring dir, and it wouldnt be deleted after the match but kept indefinitely, it would still be less space than 2 replays or so.
Doesnt seem that big.
(just to clarification: such a dds logo is small enough that it could be transfered to any client in the lobby when started, so there would be no need for some huge library)
Hm
Well, as much as I'd love making a nice team decal for myself (and having it be automatically stuck on various models) I don't think it would serve much purpose - I mean, except for construction buildings there are very few flat surfaces big enough to have a player avatar on it. Unless you want it to just be like a spray in Half-Life. Maybe your starting point has a big decal on it?
But yes, more custom colours would be good. Plus, the black colour is not really visible on the map - it needs a coloured outline.

A character is stored in 2 bytes, so the ammount of time it takes to view this post is longer then it will take to download a 16KB image... I "could" have just posted an image, but this is a better example
EDIT (SNIP) Never mind the object lesson...

There are so many people who have never played TA Spring would become die-hard fans, imo. Of course, we have the same problem with advertising we always have, but anyway, over the next year or two, word will get around about Spring.
Word or mouth is fine for advertizing, I'm sure when we get to 1.0 we can make a huge campain, posting in every forum on the net that we are registered in, emailing popular gaming sites and webcartoonists... make link buttons for our sigs and home-pages... add it to our profiles on IMs, spam it to all our friends, flood the channels of every IRC with the word, post screenshots as free wallpaper, spray paint is on... well never mind that one... but once it's stable/easy enough for people who have never used TA or beta software to get into I think it's gonna take off fast.

do all those colors effect people who are RG colorblind? I can see supporting colors that are RG colorblind freindly, but if you have a different type of colorblindness you are one of the smaller minorities on earth...Warlord Zsinj wrote:Spare a thought for the colourblind of us, and stay away from the light green and light yellows, and the purple...

I'm Red-Green colourblind. I have extreme difficulty making out light green from yellow, and cannot see purple at all.
... If you're curious, what I see instead of purple depends on how much red or blue is in it. It either looks blue, red or pink.
I can usually manage with colours in games and stuff, but some of the really obscure colours at the edge of the spectrums (the light greens, etc) I can have difficulty with.

I'm fairly certain that having custom avatars would not increase Spring's popularity. Spring already gains more and more players every month; why would a large amount of people start playing just because they can have a custom image on units? People who are techie enough to be persuaded into playing spring based on a custom avatar are the same kind of people who will play Spring whether or not this is included.
Warlord: I'm curious, how do you go about driving and determining red lights from green ones?
