FPS Kamera (a suggestion)

Post by Karotte »

i like it to play SPring, and it is a GREAT game, but there two things that im hating:
1. the Sound! (not in ca)
2. FPS-Mode

but i want to say something about the FPS-Mode, the interface is very ugly, so maby you could it desing like the tank interface from Crysis !?

see here -> http://img263.imageshack.us/i/crysis3mc ... sis%20tank

because these two cricles are very ugly!

and, maby you could change the moving of the kbots in fps mode, like so:
If you turn the camera turns it everything of the unit, not only the top. by tanks is that ok, and realitstik, and maby a new health bar.

Sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum :-)

FPS mode is only a gimmick.

Not entirely... FPS is very useful for some projects and game modes, including cooperative play. In 1944 we've found FPS in cooperative to be a growth factor - some people, otherwise overwhelmed by the scale and options, really enjoy getting down inside a tank or man and taking it to them.

I'd probably use FPS more often if the movement was that of a typical FPS game. Hell, even just making a WASD layout instead of the stupid arrow keys would be helpful.

and make the camera slaved to the aiming piece, that would help a lot, so that you can't insta move the camera 180 degrees and then have to wait for the barrel to carch up...

What was the name of that mod!! arghhh... why can't I remember?!

It was basically you and up to 3 other players iirc, running around a map in third person away from CA's chickens. The character model was the old spherebot, and the movment/control was quite nice.

There is also a fps spectator widget that is pretty awesome, but its not connected to any unit, as you're only spectating.

I think the FPS mode could be improved so it *doesn't have to be* just a gimmick. It certainly is possible and would open up a lot of new gameplay mechanics.

Regret's Mech Combat. Yeh, it was nice. Shame he's too lazy to continue it :P

I actually imagine FPS mode being better if it was TPS mode. The most confusing part about FPS mode is not being able to see my torso in relation to the rest of my body. I know there is a little indicator that shows you legs/torso alignment, but it's too hard to watch that and shoot stuff.

With a Third Person mode you would be able to see your leg/torso alignment better and keep your unit moving in the right direction.

A HUD similar to that used in MechWarrior (5 is coming out soon!) might work. Notice right below your firing reticle, there is a simple little bar that shows your angle of torso twist. It's right in your field of vision, no need to look down to see a weird little box picture. MW also had your torso return to center automatically if you weren't actually trying to aim at anything to the side (e.g. just running in a straight line without actively aiming at anything).

Last thing, I know everyone will jump on the "change your keybindings yourself" bandwagon, but I think the default "C" button to take control of a unit is problematic. Can't tell you how many times I try to hit Ctrl-C and end up accidentally entering FPS mode because the game was laggy or I missed the Ctrl button. It's especially bad if I have a long list of buildings or orders queued up for that unit, because it erases them. Sure, I can change the keybinding myself, but I'm sure I'm not the only person to encounter this problem, and with most games you want to encourage best "out of the box" behavior with fewer custom key bindings.
