New map - Mercury v1 - Now with erupting volcano!

Post by Beherith »

This time its a totally new concept, I tried to make the most evil looking map possible, with very heavy brawl gameplay.
16*16, 12 player map. Lava burns.
Might be a tad too dark, but play will tell.

Bumpwater or basic water setting recommended for maximum enjoyment.

Strong nvidia gfx hardware recommended.

Made with World Machine and WICed.

Special thanks to:
trepan, for volcano and camshake.
jK, for the bumpwater setting widget.
Braindamage: for helping me dig through water settings.
Wisse: for photoshop advice.

a very seldom-used theme 8)

i actually had some ideas of how to make a lava map really awesome lookin but dint ever make one...id lightbake the terrain texture (make it pretty dark) then paint lava veins by hand to simulate them giving off their own light. id probably use a pretty straight-down angle on spring's sun to keep the lava from getting shaded, but more exaggerated on the lightbake to emphasize normal maps.

then i figured, tinker with the waterabsorb so its red on shallows and bright yellow for deep (do negative waterabsorb values work? what about minwatercolor, what happens when its something liek 1,1,0?) and stick some thin by sea level.

anyway, good map, very vehicley looks like. does spring's pathing avoid damaging water unless absolutely necessary to go through? do hovers get hurt?

Nice looking map,really.
I still think it needs to be brighter even at the cost of not being as good looking.
Would also be happy if you made a smaller version for smaller games.
Maybe a 10x10 or a 12x12 version?

Cool, thanks! Looks neat a bit dark but that could just be my phone and the fact that it has to compete with all the bright assed forum

Because I have a set of maps similar to this in various states of completion. I abandoned them some time ago but I was under the impression that it remained beyond the reach of this format. So the rage is with myself.

I figure I may just take Zsinj up on his offer to have me assist with SW:IW mapping by checking designs and offering heightfields/concepts. When I have a little more time, at least.

Anyway, this is wonderful and I can't wait to play it. Another solid work!

This is a really good looking map and the vulcano is just simply awesome. I dont think it is to dark, you can still spot your units good enough imo.

Only thing im missing are some geothermal-spots.

I approve, always good to see a lava map.

But did you put too much metal? I bet you did. Know how much metal you're supposed to put? Put as much as you think is fair, then take away 2/3 of it. Now you're playing an OTA map like real men.

This map is for playing the Brits Vs Nazi Survivors mutator for 1944 currently unreleased. It has just the right amount of flag points.

Tried your map in the new 0.08.2 release and it looks like this:

Any idea what's causing this? Your map is not SM3, right? :P

Not sm3. Is it this map only?

Nope, noticed that it also applies to other maps, meaning that it has to be some code problem connected with the new release or a driver problem, whereupon I updated my drivers, which fixed my issues with Spring. However, I could not boot Windows normally again after that. After the loading bar, the screen became black. I've had the same thing after a driver update before and I assume that the cause is my Geforce 7950GX2, which, I heard, has bad driver support. Everything should work fine under Linux though (haven't touched it for quite a while though).

Needless to say that it's not a Spring problem per se. It's just a outdated driver and my graphics card being a bitch. I'll probably have to buy a new one the following year anyway...
