2 hours to install GTAIV

Post by SpliFF »

FUCK YOU ROCKSTAR GAMES!

There. It had to be said. I sit down to try out GTAIV and nearly 2 hours later I'm still waiting for all the crap to install. Lets see.

* Installing content, 20mins. Fair enough, it's a big game.

* Installing "Rockstar Social Club" 10min. I never asked for this application, I don't want it on my computer at all, I don't want to play online, but oh no it's required just to start the game. It also demands updates so I have to wait for them.

* Registering social club. 15min. Of course my nick is taken so there's some time wasted thinking up a new one but it's also tardy in sending my email activation.

* Installing Games of Windows Live. 5 min. Once again I neither want or need this but somehow it's forced it's way on and of course wants to update itself. I also have to dl it manually because the Rockstar installer won't do it.

* Installing .Net 3.5. 30 min. For reasons that make absolutely no sense this took half an hour to install. It's either a massive download or it's scanning my computer or something.

* Rebooting. 5min. Naturally, like all gay Windows components, I now have to reboot. My computer reboots reasonably quick (because I rip all all unnesessary services and gayware) but it takes time to close down and save all my open applications (i also have remote sessions and terminals to exit).

* Activating. 5mins. I have to locate and enter serial number. Fairly common but still more wasted time. The activation software decides to keep opening IE4.0 (Installed standalone for web testing) which clearly won't work and is not my default browser so I have to copy-paste back to FF.

* Nag screens. 5mins. Throughout the whole process I'm being nagged to do this or that, agreeing to give Rockstar whatever they want (like my windows details, hardware specs, MAC, first-born child, etc). Being told things that are obvious or stupid (like the Launcher not actually exiting when you click exit).

* Settings 10mins. Forums I've read say GTA comes with locked performance settings. Apparently some command-line trickery is required to fix this instead of simple options screen (fucking console ports). Then it turns out the launcher ignores the settings. I also need to configure the "Social Club" not to run every fucking time I reboot.

* Rant. Another 10mins for this rant, because if I don't vent soon I'll probably smash something.

Definately the last Rockstar software I ever buy. I don't care if their next game is the best game ever. They simply have no respect for their customers and they've deservedly earned my permanent dislike as a result.

UPDATE:

Oh yeah, the fun doesn't stop.

* Fixing Rockstars Mistakes - 10 mins. To research why I get a fatal error immediately upon starting and to apply workaround (Win2k compatibility mode). This could go up to 30 mins if I do the official fix (install XP SP3).

* Windows Live Profile - 5 mins. I can't SAVE the game unless I log in to Windows Live. Fucking hell!! You can't play GTA without saving, it's impossible. So more time wasted. At least I don't have to create a full registration.

What really fucks me off about this whole thing is that only the first part (copying the game data) is actually necessary to play the game. The rest is FORCED down your throat like a fucking trained seal - presumably on the assumption that installing DRM and spyware all over your PC will somehow make your experience better and you will fall over yourself to buy extra crap from their online portal.

I really hope this costs them money. In fact I would wish they'd go broke except for the fact that if that happened I could never reinstall the game (it requires online activation).

So I'll just have to settle for this post and a parting comment:

Fuck you in the fucking face Rockstar Games. Fuck your goat and your lice infested mums. Fuck yourselves so fucking hard you fucking fly to moon - and when you get there don't ever fucking return! Have I fucking made myself fucking clear?

Fuck you very much,

Wasn't GTA IV also the game with all the "cool" conditions buried in all the different EULAs?

Yes. I skimmed the EULA. It's an open fuck fest.

nowadays PC's are full of so much verification BS because of piracy thats its a pain to the people who actually want to buy the game.

Ive been put off buying games recently (i usually used to buy 1 every month or so) havent bought a game in months apart from pre ordering HoN.

To much DRM crap and verification bullshit not worth the hassles :]

I didn't pay $80 AUD for Spring and its install time is a direct result of limited bandwidth rather than greed. 98% of the install files are essential for play - I can live with that. Even then I got the last Spring installed and playing in around 30mins. If it came on a DVD like a commercial game the install time would be around 5 minutes + registration.

Rockstar have absolutely no excuse. They're just greedy fucks.

+1

On top of that I had to install GFX drivers because all I could see was the skycube. Another 20 minutes!

I pirated it and got to skip half those steps :>

Then I played it for an hour (45 minutes of this watching Republican Space Rangers) and never touched it again.

It's unfortunate that they've added so much bloatware. I had GTA 3 for PC, and I don't remember having to install anything other than the game content.

*sigh*

gone are the days of gouranga.

rockstar, although they've made some fun games, have also made some real stinkers. the fun-factor in the "good" rockstar games is high, but this is compensated for by flawed engines and physics.

i read the EULA, and lol'ed... so much restriction on a game that is based around stealing things.

+2 hours to install a game? that's unreal... i don't think i've had to deal with that since the days of pirated copies of quake distributed on 16 floppy disks... i remember far cry took a while on my old comp, but at least it wasn't jammed with bloatware, and probably was only about 20 minutes.

im going to bring this up whenever anyone bitches about spring being tough to install... at least theres no social club or games for windows, amirite?

suggestion noted; will never buy any rockstar PC games.

btw you don't actually have to install XP sp3, you just need to make your registry think that you have it.

i hear the game runs far slower than it should, too

I tend to allways illegally download the game and test it out, and if it is worth my money i will buy it. Kinda like the demos that were offered back in the good old days.

The described problems in this thread were what kept me from buying GTA IV, the actual gameplay was kinda ok compared to other current games.

As a representative of the moderation staff of the spring engine's official forums I would like to mention that we do not officially endorse the illegal download and installation of software, nor the breach of EULAs even when doing so is only to make it possible to play a game you have rightfully purchased.

Apart from that, as an individual and in no way representing my position as a moderator I am very happy to live in a country where my inalienable rights (currently) include the fair duplication and distribution of materials that in other countries would constitute illegal activity.

My current preference is to only acquire software from companies who choose not to rape my computer during the installation process, or at least do so in a manner that I find marginally palatable (stardock and blizzard for example)
