Well they sure make a lot of drama and overdo it a bit but imo that reaction is justified. Nobody would want a system like that where a few people can control entire nation's citizen as they wish. Any promises of this giving more security or anything are just plain nonsense. Such a system has next to no advantages for the average citizen but creates fear, intimidation and gives a huuuge potential of someone abusing those "powers". And let's face it: We're humans - it won't take long until someone will do so if not some of the guys creating this already have this in mind...
Another small comment:
I read that in the US news the media and the opposition would tell lots of lies on Obama's entire health care stuff etc. and what's going on in Europe. Really seems to be true: This thing of getting money for wrecking an old car is NOT permanent here in Germany. That's a plain lie and I don't know how someone would get the impression of it being permanent or even where the money for that would come from. We're currently eating up the last few numbers of that offer which are left...

Re: WOW
The cash for clunkers idea is IMO one of the few genuinely original, good ideas I've heard from politicians in a while. Canada implemented its own version of course, but I think our way of showing that we're not just copying America was to make the trade-in value only $500.
