Was just wondering if it is worth the shot to attempt to remake the machines
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machines_%28video_game%29)
The only impossible thing to make at the moment is the Fog-of-War, although for multiplayer purposes it wouldnt matter that much anyway.
Would anyone be interested to play/help with models/code?
I am a C++ coder, have been working on integration of LUA for a game, also have higher-than-newbie experience with modelling.
Machines remake?

Re: Machines remake?
why not make something machines-ish? that way you have no issues with people and all the ip woes I have to hear about. That and you can expand on the game utilizing what spring has to offer.
You are also not telling people what you are asking of them.
How many units per faction?
Describe the economy.
What are you going to do beyond being the "idea guy?"
Are you going to add to the game, if so what?
Is it going to require specialized maps?
Important also is the license you will ask people to hand work over in. some modelers like myself will refuse to help commercial or closed license projects.

Re: Machines remake?
You are totally right, I should clarify the topic.
If you have never played machines game, you should check out the IGN review, since it is very well explained there, but in short, its was the first game to introduce the FPS control over your unit, and many missions were based around that.
There is only one faction.
We are looking for about 50, up to 200 military units per game, with 100 + 50 ballast for civilian units + buildings.
I am planning to make a direct copy of the game to start with, to familiarise myself with spring's coding and to see how well will it work out. If everything will be fine, I will advance on the game.
I personally plan to make the game as a whole, starting from code, finishing with models, but would obviously appreciate any help or interest from the community.
Most of the current maps would fit the game to some extent, since the economy is _exactly_ the same as BA, but with only addition that resources are transferred to the base via units. (i.e. extractor -> carrier unit -> general funds)
the whole project is going to be GPLv3 and CC-BY-NC-SA.
The sole purpose of this post was to see how many people would be interested in playing the machine game remake, since at its time, it was quite popular.

Re: Machines remake?
how many units in faction 1?
Do they have to be exactly like the art or would you let someone be a bit different?
(good to see you taking the initiative)
Do all assets have to be gpl or can they be gpl compatible license as well?

Re: Machines remake?
I do not mind some models to be closed to the public, its really up to the author. All of the code must be GPL.
there are about 20-30 units (hard to tell since they are mostly low poly and some of them have only difference in number of cannons that they have) Its quite easy to follow the general design guidelines ( which allow a lot of flexibility) but even then innovation should never be prohibited, as long as the intention is to fit the game.
I might end up doing proof-of-concept game by using the original IP, but that again will depend on the interest of the community.

Doesn't work that way.==Troy== wrote:Would anyone be interested to play/help with models/code?
First your make the mod all by yourself. Then, if you're very lucky, people will help.

How many games of EE, Cursed, EvoRTS, Gundam, or Pure do you see in the lobby atm? (Not counting empty autohost.)

Not entirely true...zwsg wrote:Doesn't work that way.

The project I'm working on right now started with two persons. As usual I then worked out a design document and passing that around plus having a discussion base made a couple of guys curious and some of them actually join...
So you have a point that just a bit of "talking" here in the forum isn't enough. You can catch yourself some helpers though if you work out your thoughts and everything seems reasonable. It also helps of course if you have prooved already that you actually know quite a bit of Spring or the tasks you want to take...
