can you make profit off games you make with this engine or is it strictly free games?

GPL is compliant under commercial licenses, and most of the stuff that is commonly shared is either GPL or PD. So yes, you could sell a game made for the spring engine.
*Note* The people here will be complete douchewads to you if you do though, cause everything in life is supposed to be free, apparently.
