0.80: IPs

Post by SirMaverick »

I'd like to see only a part of the IP shown ingame like SmurfServ does. This is enough to identify malicious users.
Reason behind this are privacy issues: the IPs will end up in infologs and demos and will be pasted everywhere.

this is a somewhat valid concern, but the host should see full IPs in the game (he can see them anyway in other software).

we can transmit a hash of the full ip to identify users from the same ISP or something.

His OS can show them. He does not need full IPs in the game.

Just hide the lower part. Hashes are not useful, because for ipv4 they are easy to brute force.

I changed it so the IPs do only show up in the server's stdout and on the autohost interface.

edit: not to infolog, to stdout

No clients see part of IPs? How can the malicious player be deteced on autohosts?

I don't know the autohost interface. Does this mean this will end up in lobby chat(-> privacy issues)?

Full IP in server log? Does not prevent privacy issues.

If they're the server, they'll have their router's traffic logs. There's no cheap way to prevent that- if you're getting griefed by somebody who looked up your IP, please remind the griefer that that's not going to lead to good consequences.

As in, "I'll talk to my ISP and file a formal complaint, and they'll talk to your ISP, and you will get dropped for breaking ToS and will have to find new Internet service".
