I dont think a game needs to offer anything new and interesting to a RTS genre. Good basebuilding rts'es nowadays are few and far between (battleforge, dawn of war, Company of heroes etc). And i'd pay to get a good quality c&c style rts game like sc2 or emperor:battle for dune
I've enjoyed every single one of red alert & c&c games (even tiberian sun which many will no doubt bash~~), And while youre right saying that they did not offer anything interesting, you also forget that they also werent total failures, The games usually came out without any gamebreaking bugs , with a decent balance(again im sure many will QQ about this) And especially red alert series had its own quirks with the comical theme of zeppelins and lightning shooting soldiers and whatnot~~

Re: C&C4
Well C&C 1 was just great (if you didn't play it go and download it - it's in fact for free nowadays!) because it wasn't just a milestone in RTS genre but also had a cool story and atmosphere to it. Tiberian Sun then imo focused too much on the videos (which sure are the best of all the C&C games imo) what was cool especially when watching the promo videos but once you got your hands on it you noticed that they had ripped out "the soul" of the first C&C game taking out all the cool "wars on the media" and the "realistic" setting plus the gameplay was not that good and yeah it was unbalanced (Nod Artillery pwnage)...
When C&C 3 came out the gameplay style wasn't my favorite so I just bought it when it became available for a cheap price and well it was a good choice to do so. While the balance was okayish except for those Scrin air bogies the story and video part got way worse. The story pretty much was nonexistant and ends e.g. with a "Welcome to the inner circle! I'll explain all the strange things in the next episode (or maybe not) so go buy it too!". Seriously what bullshit was that about? The videos now had lost their soul too and consisted of just a couple of TV- and movie-VIPs put in a 50$ outfit trying to create the illusion of any real story behind the missions...
Now concerning C&C 4 - I have no expectations towards that game and I guess I'll just buy it later on for a cheap price if reviews say there's going to be a decent story. I guess it's a good thing that it'll end the tiberium saga and I guess the trailer for it is also well known:

With what screenshots are floating around and Muzic's new info about the gameplay I'm even less impressed. Quite strange to totally redo the gameplay inside a series - that's like turning Operation Flashpoint 2 into a UT style game. But well it seems EA just aims for what is popular right now and gives a shit about what once was C&C...
Mainstream ftw!
EDIT:
Oh and Battlecast Primetime is the most shitty ad campaign I've seen yet. A yelling and overenthusiastic anchorman praising how unbelievably cool the new C&C is going to be plus dull jokes - it's just bad...
At first you think that it's like a funny idea to do sort of a "faked" tv-show until you realize that it's not irony or something but they really are serious about it...

Re: C&C4
They should stop when it still has a decent name. I recently downloaded cnc gold and beat both nod and gdi (almost called them core haha) campaigns and found it way more enjoyable than most of the crap they try to sell you these days. for some reason I haven't found any games enjoyable anymore. They just lack 'soul', or certain character in their environment. meh. Maybe I just grew out of playing videos games. Similarly the main reason I loose interest in modding spring, because I don't play spring. I find the constant bugs then updates, mod competition bickering, and request to add to the engine really irritating, but lets not get into that. I think I'm going to play some dune 2 or warcraft humans vs orcs on dosbox instead of buying anything new for awhile.
Re: C&C4
You could play any of the games on Spring... I mean, I know you're into other mech worlds personally, but we do have Gundam and, hell, 1944.
I do agree, however, most games seem to lack content or soul. The only games that keep me outside of Spring are Hearts of Iron 2 and Dwarf Fortress.
