How do i add new races.

How do i add new races.

Discuss game development here, from a distinct game project to an accessible third-party mutator, down to the interaction and design of individual units if you like.

I would like to add new races for TA Spring to play in skirmish as well as multiplayer. Is that presently possible. Great game.

Kindof... You can currently replace arm or core with another race, but the client doesn't support more custom input from mod files as to how many races are in the game and what thier icons are/what they are called, and a few small changes need to be made to the main engine so that 3 or more races can run at the same time.

Honestly the biggest thing keeping it from happening right now is that no one has a project going that requires it, so it just keeps getting shuffled to the bottom of the list in terms of priorities.

Well, you can change the name, but otherwise Swiftspear's right. The little icons and the fact that you can only have two races at a time in the lobby are still hard coded, though. The engine support is there, it's just the client that needs to pick up the slack.

My project is most definitely going to need more than two races.
possibly even fore than 5..... but that has yet to be seen. So there is at least 1 project that needs this feature, I'd do it myself but I'm still new to the whole ta spring thing and I want to learn more about the units and the scripts before I start digging through the source code.

If you produce 3 or more working races in seperate compiles I'm sure someone would make it happen. None of the projects that are currently anywhere near compleation need the feature, and you can test multiple races without implimenting them all at the same time as well, so finalizing the playability is the only stage at which the feature priority really shifts to nessicary.

tbh any game with more than 2 races is probably horribly imbalanced, i mean look at OTA that had 2 races only and many ppl still screamed imbalance!

You could try the good old Galactic Gate trick: both arm and core starts with a building, the galactic gate, that can instabuild half a dozen brand of commander, but once one commander is built, the gate jams. It's the trick TA:Mutation used to have many races in TA.

Starcraft... WC3... any of those stupid RTS where all the races are clones of eachother anyways...

You can balance several races... it just gets exponentially more difficult with each you add, expecially if you don't use clone units between the races.

Yep. I agree - StarCraft is _not_ the model game to go complaining about similar factions. In fact, I'd say it is the best example of differing ones.

TA, on the other hand, is second only to Dune II for having over-similar factions. IMHO, TA could've been done just as well with only a single unit set, identifying different groups with different colours (like the all-terran demo campaign of StarCraft, or in Z where everybody has the same set of robots but the heros are red and the enemies are blue).

Thanks for all the replies. I have been collecting different races for several years and have been chomping at the bit to be able to at least throw a few together for a battle. I realize that most of the races are clones of one another but i still think sutble differences in armor, speed, weapons , water depth, etc creates a new level of gameplay. I wish I knew more about programing I would love to see a hybrd insect race and a totally ambphibious race (plants and all).

I think that would be great and why not the engine can handle it. This is what kept TA alive for so long anyway.

Is Spring like TA where everyone has to have the same unit files to play, or can someone have entirely different ufo files and play someone else.
