why dont u just play the game?
Half the games are for some un-heard of mod or some un-heard of map.... why don't you just play the game?
We can't download your shit, cuz it don't work... the mod download doesn't work, those crappy maps don't work, just play the game.

Re: why dont u just play the game?
Spring is an engine, not a game.
There are multiple games for it.
Some people like to play one sort of game.
Other people like to play another game.
Not everyone wants to play on the same set of maps all the time.
Maps and mods can be downloaded from jobjol, unless your web browser doesn't work either.

Re: why dont u just play the game?
also, for some people making stuff is more fun than playing with it.
Re: why dont u just play the game?
What the hell is "the game" in this context? It's not as if downloading stuff from spring.jobjol.nl is hardgrey666 wrote:Half the games are for some un-heard of mod or some un-heard of map.... why don't you just play the game?

True, most of the games are BA, and from what I've heard Delta Siege Dry is the most popular map at this time. But you should try other stuff as well. My personal favourite TA-based mod is NOTA, it has entirely different gameplay and there is a fairly regular player base. CA is also popular, though I haven't played it yet, so I can't say anything about it. EE (Expand&Exterminate) is also an old favourite of mine, it's based loosely off of the Earth 21*0 series, it isn't being developed any more AFAIK but it's a nice change of pace sometimes. Spring:1944 is a WWII mod that's also quite popular, though I haven't seen many games with it tbh (but that may just be me). XTA is a more rigidly OTA-based mod than BA with a focus on micro, but I haven't played it since the last period I was active. AFAIK, that's pretty much the top-6 of most played mods.
As for maps, different maps can change the gameplay entirely. Some established maps you might want to try are Victoria Crater, SailAway, Altored Divide, Charlie in the Hills, some of the Delta Siege variants (but stay away from Delta Siege Dry Special), the Folsom Dam maps, High and Low, HorstAndGraben, Intercontinental32x32 (just because it's entirely different and unique), Kolmogorov (newer, 10-way FFA, very good), the Vauban maps (somewhat well-played but porcy, can be fun in a singleplayer game), Trenches64 (sadly isn't working for me atm, but a very..... interesting map), Tropical, Tangerine (classic map), Small Divide and Mars (last two come (or at least came) with Spring AFAIK). Some of those are just my personal favourites and don't see that much action, but others are often played. I really recommend trying a few of 'em sometime.
And whatever you do, stay away from SpeedMetal (or SpeedBalls or anything called Speed*).

Bullshit. Best mod/map combos are BA/DSD, and XTA with just about any map. Best maps are Aquatic Divide, Icy run, Folsom, and Finn's Revenge. Dont play NOTA if you dont want to break your keyboard when you absentmindedly pound it into your desk, and dont play CA if you want any sort of sanity and strategy in your game.
Wait, you got 1 thing right. Definitely dont play maps with the word speed in them. Also avoid maps with the word green in them.
Re: why dont u just play the game?
All BA/DSD and no variation makes Johnny a dull boy. Try new maps. Try new mods. You might not like NOTA's gameplay but I love it.Tribulex wrote:Bullshit. BA/DSD and ssb (i forgot that one) are the best because they have so many ways you can win them. Its not worth sacrificing strategic and tactical possibility to play other maps.

True, but after a while you've seen the exact same terrain so many times it's just not interesting anymore. To me, at least, the map itself is part of what makes a game good. Once you know the exact build order for every start position down to the second, and you know the exact details of the terrain by heart, the map just isn't interesting anymore. New maps may not offer as many different ways to win, but at least they're different and present you with a fresh challenge. Or simply gorgeous visuals.BA/DSD and ssb (i forgot that one) are the best because they have so many ways you can win them. Its not worth sacrificing strategic and tactical possibility to play other maps.
Trenches64 and Intercontinental 32x32 may be weird maps, and I have no idea how they actually play, but they're so wildly different from the norm that just playing no-bots singleplayer on it and mucking about with a handful of units is fun and an interesting diversion.
SailAway is a beautiful map, and the focus on naval means that it's ideal if you're a big fan of navy (e.g. you're me), especially if the mod you're playing has special navy (e.g. NOTA) or no navy - which creates a whole new challenge.
Charlie in the Hills used to be played extensively during my previous active period, it may not offer as much variety as the common maps but it's a new and different terrain and still offers plenty of ways to win.
Kolmogorov is a very good-looking, interesting new map, we'll have to wait and see how it actually plays after many people have tried it but I have a good feeling about it. And besides, balanced 10-way FFA. That's just too special not to download.
Folsom Dam, High and Low and HorstAndGraben all offer somewhat similar, yet different gameplay, in that they all have plateaus and lowlands, and the individual characteristics of each map makes them interesting to play. In the Folsom Dam maps, the dam itself is an important source of resources and can be used as a defensive strongpoint, but going around it on either side is a very real possibility so you're never entirely safe. In High and Low, both sides are separated by a river, and the well-defensible north has less build area while the poorly defensible south has plenty, which offers a variety of gameplay possibilities, especially when you factor in the river separating the two sides, and the lake in the west. HorstAndGraben offers plateau vs. lowlands or plateau vs. plateau+lowlands vs. lowlands combat, with relatively cramped building area except for a few larger sections, even metal distribution and plenty of ways to expand and attack.
Victoria Crater is absolutely gorgeous and well-crafted, a pinnacle of map design IMO. It's a real geological feature on Mars, and offers well-balanced gameplay for a lot of different types of games.
Small Divide and Mars are sadly some of the few maps that utilise one of Spring's more interesting new features, ambient ground metal as opposed to metal spots.
Re: why dont u just play the game?
There are a lot of games. I play many of them. There are a lot of mods, I play many of those too. I just download from sites and copy to the requisite folder, then refresh.

Re: why dont u just play the game?
NOTA is very frustrating if you are either dumb, or don't understand it.
However, if you play a few games and come to a basic understanding of how it works, it's fun, strategic, and unforgiving.

Re: why dont u just play the game?
Just don't do what I did and get too used to it - I've got a near-instinctive grasp of NOTA basics now, but I apparently have absolutely no concept anymore of how any other TA-based mod plays. In NOTA, I at least still stand some chance of survival, in BA for instance I am absolutely, completely, utterly bad. Used to be different, but during my inactive time NOTA stuck with me while BA apparently slipped from my mind almost completely. It just feels weird to have this mobile walker unit instead of a gigantic towersmokingwreckage wrote:NOTA is very frustrating if you are either dumb, or don't understand it.

Re: why dont u just play the game?
That's just because NOTA is so little played no one got good at it, so any noob stand an equal chance at it.

seriously guys, this is a pretty obvious troll
Re: why dont u just play the game?
I still consider this, together with the death of EE (but let's not get into that again) and the obsolescence of WD (ancient history), to be one of the greatest tragedies of Spring.zwzsg wrote:That's just because NOTA is so little played no one got good at it, so any noob stand an equal chance at it.
Speedmetal and Greenfields aren't tragedies. NOTA receiving little play time is a tragedy. Prometheus Bound is a tragedy. Someone running onto the stage naked shouting unintelligible gibberish is just an idiotic asstard.
I'm a trusting soul, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Besides, it's really good for my karma. I don't believe it actually exists, but if it does, I'm good. (Literally.Peet wrote:seriously guys, this is a pretty obvious troll

Re: why dont u just play the game?
Troll thread or not, I agree this project has a very high developer/player ratio. Some more "regular" players would be very welcome.
