Except we are suing civ forge, not vanilla. not quite as hard as orc mod, but giant bug men with 4 arms for 3 shields....yeaaaaahh.

So, you switch them all to miner? Urgh. Did you create that angled fjord thing? I guess I'd need to make some severe changes to how I play even to compete. I only level up/down when I need to, never make rooms larger than 11 in either direction and never make clusters of more than 2 staircases. That said I have comparatively little experience. Charming cave name.

In my crash course to learn how to play, incidentally, I dug down three floors, starting with two stairs directly under my start position in the middle of nowhere, then accidentally channeled from the clay layer to the first stone level and caused one lake to drain through the fortress, killing nobody but basically screwing my third level permanently. I don't like this newfangled z-axis.

They can have as many jobs on at a time as you want, and I usually make rather flat fortresses.

Yes, but with too many jobs they don't seem to get anything done in any.

GuildDented, a name symbolic of all the strife our group has been having setting out. But enough working that around in our heads; we're finally here to bring glory to the mountainhomes. I'll be writing about the progress every few weeks and making sketches.

Day 1. I realize just how small an outpost of 7 dwarves really is.

We immediately set to work at a proper indoors fort. Each of us has brought an axe and determination. I may be the leader, but it doesn't mean anything here. We dig!

This shall be the centerpiece. This room shall act as a stockpile for our goods with a trade depot at the north end holding an open invitation to any caravans. Along the sides shall be the workshops where we earn our keep.

Exploratory shafts will be dug here to find the extend of that fertile red sand. Hopefully a farm can be built.

We'll also get started right away on the sleeping chambers.

The Earth brings out its treasures already. A wonderful day.

I've been informed that just East of our location lies a magma vent. This will be very useful for metalwork, as magma can be used directly as a heat source with no need to burn fuel.

Nearby is even more to mine out.

And a vein of copper too.

With the extent of the red sand found, the area is dug out and a farm established. In the nearby rock another room is created for seed and food storage, and a still is placed there to take the hard-earned plants to make alcohol and leave behind more seeds.

The rooms for our starting group of 7 are finished, with suspended plans laid out for several more.

Ah, summer. And soon the central chamber will be complete, and we can relax and enjoy it.

With the urgent construction out of the way we begin a more leisurely project, a dining hall.

Autumn hits, and with it a wave of baby animals. When they grow up many of thest too will be trained to help defend the fort.

A caravan comes to trade. Unfortunately, we don't have anything to give them yet, having just finished basics like furnishing the fort.

I lay out plans to a complex for anyone that needs an office or a personal dining room.

Negotiations for the next year's trade are complete. Note to self: Goblets, and lots of them.

A thief tries to sneak in, but is stopped at the entrance.

No one even bothers to chase after the runt; it didn't even make it inside, let alone reach the stockpile or steal anything.


At the first anniversary of its founding a community effort was put into a painting of the fort in its entirety, along with some future plans sketched in brown. I think it turned out quite well.

nice job, but you should check your sleeping chambers, 1x1/2x2 hallways are still a bit small, but i guess youll just expand them in the future or mine a new area~~

Also, for future reference its a good idea to get one dwarf to start crafting stone as soon as you start, so you get rid of excess stone quickly, and have something to trade with for the first year caravan.

Another good tip is starting out with a decent cook, and creating fine meals (which are worth thousands!) and then using them to buy your first anvil (starting with it is kinda pointless since you rarely start out with flux and ore right away) food, seeds and weapons

Whats better: a mapwith a magma vent or a map with lots of diffrent resources? ive always found that areas with lava vents only have a few diffrent resources.

It's all on a single z level? Not that big deal but quite much time is wasted just walking around.

using the up and down keys isnt a big deal

do you have collapsing off? if not, how did you get such a huge room without a collapse?

There was a thread on bay12games forums where some dude created a perfect fortress area containing every single feature (volcano inside lake/river, chasm, giant spiders, outside river, all kinds of minerals etc

ill attempt to dig up the thread!

ik: there's no collapsing in the 3d version - as long as you've got at least one support, it'll stick. there were ways to make floating stuff, too (hint: involves frozen water).
