it's the usage of SLC (single layer) vs MLC (multiple layers)
SLC will last much longer (50+ years?) and perform faster, while MLC drives generally last 5-10 years and cost less.

Actually it's levels, not layers. Levels refers to charging levels.
MLC will have more than 2 different states for each cell, and is therefore more prone to errors and wears out faster.
This is the similar to the technique used in many tape storage systems where different levels of magnetization are used to increase storage capacity.
