Very common questions (Read before posting a new topic)

Post by Peet »

I figured it'd be good to create an all-encompassing FAQ thread, as few read the wiki and these questions are posted almost daily in this forum.

"How do I get maps or mods?"
"Whenever I try to launch spring, I get 'GL_ARB_ENV_combine not found'"
Your graphics card or drivers do not have proper openGL (the rendering library Spring uses) support.
Various combinations of:
 • Older graphics cards
 • ATI graphics cards
 • Old graphics drivers
 • Using the Vista operating system
- can cause this issue. Try updating your graphics drivers, upgrading to XP or Linux, or obtaining a moderately new Nvidia graphics card.

"I am getting terrible graphical performance (low FPS)"
This can be caused by several issues:
 • If you have a Nvidia card and a dual-core CPU, turn off threaded optimizations for Spring in the Nvidia Control Panel.
 • If you have the graphical settings on very high, or shadowmap resolution set high (above 2048x2048) and the entire map appears to be in shadow, turn down the shadowmap resolution. High shadowmap resolutions use a large amount of video memory- more than 512MB on your graphics card is generally necessary for 8192x8192.

"I am running Vista and I get habitual graphic driver crashes"
Run Spring in windowed mode, with the window size set slightly smaller than your desktop resolution.

Anything else
After checking the stickies and first few threads in this forum, feel free to create a thread to ask for help on your more unique issue. Use a descriptive thread title and try to give as much information (both situational information related to a crash, and system specifications, etc).

Suggestions for, or addendums to this thread are welcome.

What about links to replay uploaders such as http://replays.adune.nl/ ?
It's the only one I could find so far.

Maybe you should remove http://www.springplayersclub.com/ from the list...

For completeness, this should say what to do with the downloaded files.

Also you need to update some of the Continent because some of those problems are already gone.

Also, the registry doesn't work for me when I am trying to recover my password, so make an alt.

If it doesn't work you either never entered it on the present install or deleted the password trying to log yourself in. There is no alternative, you can PM a moderator and have her reset your password.

Not so, Neddie. The issue there is when tasclient switched from storing the pass to storing the pass's md5 it wasn't converting. So with the newer versions you can't get the original pass back, not that you need it, and that faq entry is obsolete; I'll remove it.

Actually, half of these are obsolete. :? Removed the following:
"When I updated to the new beta TASClient, I can no longer login! It says my username or password is bad!"
If you update to the new TASClient and you can't log in, you need to type your password again in the options dialog.
If you forgot your password, go to start, press run (or press the windows key and R at the same time if you can't find run), open "regedit", then navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TASClient\Preferences"
Your password should be in the pane on the right.

"Whenever I try to launch TASClient I get a 'No mods found' or 'No maps found' error!"
You didn't select any mods or maps to download through the installer, or the download/installation of them failed. Download some maps or mods from one of the links in the next section.

"Whenever I join a game in the lobby, there is a red 'no sync' icon next to my name!" or "Whenever I start a game, I get a 'missing default cursor' error!"
This is almost always caused by a lack of OTA content packages in your /base/ folder. Put the contents of this zip file in your Spring folder, overwriting your current base folder.
Please remove the evolutionrts.info/maps and /mods links. Those no longer exist and all that is handled solely by the springfiles.com mirroring system.
