System hangs, Ubuntu 9.04 64bit

Playing single player I have no issues but when playing (or specing) muilt player games my whole system will lock up after several minutes. The system is totally unresponsive including mouse. Can not change to console. Can not restart xorg using ctrl+alt+backspace. Only resort is to press the reset button.

I am running ubuntu 9.04 (64bit) which was a fresh install not an upgrade on a 90GB partition (+10GB swap). Only other apps installed from base are Opera, Virtualbox, BONIC, Wine, Unbuntu restricted pack, Nvida graphics drivers and virtual box. No apps running while trying to play spring.

Hardware includes Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard using onboard NIC. Winfast geforce 8600-GT video card, Intel E2160 CPU, 8GB generic RAM.

What has magic sysrequest to do with restarting xserver? Nothing!

CTRL+Alt + Backspace = Restart Xserver = deactivated!

Alt + Print/Sysreq + reisub = magic sysrequest = restart your pc safely (if your kernel is still alive...)

hiya i think ive been having the same problem

try alt+print screen+k to see it you can kill X if that work log back in and open a terminal and type dmesg if there is Xid errors in there its the same and im having , i think ive found a workaround ive now had my system not crashing for 3 days so far :)

if alt+printscreen +k does not work do you have a spare system you can ssh in from ?

does it still have vterms 1-8 enabled?

you can alt-printscreen+r and ctrl+alt+1, then login and kill the offending program

ctrl-alt-backspace is disabled in ubuntu
there's an option to get it back though

ctrl-alt f1 will open up a terminal you can do stuff with.

Personally, I recommend yakuake, its alot nicer than using the built-in terminal app, or having to rape your video card in a tty prompt.
