Sometimes when playing Spring (BA 6.85) the sound will give out and I can no longer get any sound from anything including Spring, movies and MP3s until I reboot the machine. Sometimes the sound will fail while playing an effect and that sound bite will repeat until the current playing game closes. This problem will happen every day but not every game.
I am running Spring from the Ubuntu repository. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 which was installed fresh 2 months ago. I am using the onboard sound on a ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard, using a nVidia 8600GT. I normally play in windowed mode not full screen.
From Googling I have read that the pulse audio can be buggy, does anyone think this could be it? Does anyone have any ideas? Even if it's just a workaround.

Yes, other people reported problems with pulseaudio too.
Fix: disable / uninstall pulseaudio

is pulse audio in linux something like the appendix in the human body?
it is just installed by default, but you should remove it if it makes problems and you will not loose any ability?
