Xp is running slow becaus the install is about 2 years old, I have a 4200+ dualcore 64 bit amd processor (2.4 ghz/core), a 8600GT and 1 GB of ram (maybe I should add 1 gb?).

I'm sure vista will run fine

Dont go 32bit vista
Dont go 64bit XP

Vista should normally take up 512mb of ram idle it may go above, but with work it can be 250.

But as said, if XP is slowing, it wont make a difference what OS you put on unles syou maintain it correctly.

the more ram you have the more ram vista will use, so what vista normaly uses will be different for everyone else.

No, XP is running slow because you loaded it up with crap, not because it's 'old'. My 3-year old XP install is *faster* than a new install because I don't install bloatware/spyware and because I removed most of Microsoft's bloat (ie: litestep desktop, disabled useless services, cache optimisation, etc...)

Anyway, you can't use Vista with 1 Gig of RAM so if you're silly enough to install it you're going to want at least 3 Gig (1 for Vista itself and 2 for applications/games).

I ran it on my laptop with 1GB for a while. Netbeans ate ram for breakfast though so i added an extra GB.

I ran XP on a 380Mhz AMD K6 with 192MB ram, which outperformed xp on a duron 1400+ lmao. It seemed to run faster, tho you could tell when you ran some games that the extra cpu grunt was needed

@Spliff:

I said that the installation is old, not that xp is slow becaus it's old

And I don't have spyware, it's just that I have too many stuff installed (that I don't need).

And I'll probably add an extra gb of ram.

vista64 is a fine OS and everyone who thinks XP is better is an idiot who doesn't base his opinion on actual facts.

ME is worse than both vista and 95. ME is the worst operating system Microsoft has ever released. It managed to be less useful and less stable than even windows 95, which is astonishing and offensive. Vista is only a bit worse than XP, which is probably Microsoft's most solid OS to date.

I'm just trying to insult Vista a bit. I know ME was designed "for kids", but it even failed at that.

ME failed at just working, nevermind running programs.

Vista is stable and solid, its minimum requirements are too much for a lot of people who want something for nothing, and a lot of developers ignored official advice on what they need to do and took shortcuts, which as a result left them buggered under vista.

Windows 7 should be fine ^_^

Hmm, I just installed Vista ultimate 64 bit, it works perfectly and I had no problems at all fixing the drivers :)

And the best part is that the sound works again :P
