So what is your fucking problem with non independent ip?

Post by smoth »

I didn't rage when the community decided to start making denigrating comments about the "non-independent IP" projects while still embracing the truly illegal ta projects. FFS, I even stopped crusading to see the end of said illegal content because no one cares. I do not appreciate that these ip-based projects are treated as second class, like they are some how tainted. It isn't easier to work within a pre-existing world, anyone who can do a good model is easily creative enough to make his/her own world. it is exceptionally hard to work within pre-existing constraints.

I have put a serious amount of work into my project as have the others. You know, we are allowed to make them. Sure, it isn't free to give away all rights to it to the leaching mob on the forum. That doesn't mean that through their development there are no contributions to the community. In the way of scripts, effects, lua, art etc. Just because you cannot have full rights to everything within them doesn't mean they are bad or they have not given back to the community.

If I did make an independent ip project, it would be shunned if I didn't just give the whole thing away to you lot. That is right, the attitude here is HAND IT OVER NOW! So you guys think that giving to the community here is mandatory yet over half of you who have this attitude do not contribute fuck all. I have only ever given to the community because I believe in sharing not because you fuckers have any right to what I put my time, efforts AND money into. Tools cost money for honest people!

So to paraphrase an old president, "ask not what the community can do for you but what YOU CAN DO for the community." I have no problem sharing, the same can be said of many others. We have piles of content available to the community. Just stop treating us poorly if we don't want to share something, esp if you are not making the effort to share something.

I don't think there is any community-wide issue with non-independent ip, but there is a desire to have at least one good free-as-in-freedom semi-normal rts to pack in the linux distros.

@what lurker said: Doesn't EE fit that bill? EvoRTS is always there, but people here and there like to complain that it isn't pretty enough so as I said, doesn't EE fit that pretty much right on the money?

The problem is that you're dealing with a large OTA-based community here. To most OTA players OTA is god and OTA based stuff that was enhanced is even better.

I have looked at your work and some of it is actually very stunning, but nothing that interests me, sorry to say that, but i'm not into Gundam. Nonetheless i know what you mean and it should be stopped ...

There are several projects that are being done but that doesn't mean that all of us have to stop what we are currently doing and immediately devote years to a project that we will never make money off of and others WILL. It is a huge demand and I feel the content devs are being pressured in that direction. Several of us working on existing non-independant projects have our own ideas sure. Given the culture here. lets say that I have an idea, something to do after TD and gundam. Let's say I already have it planned out and short of modeling the units I have a base for it already in gundam. Lets say I did plan it out to make and give away just like td... it would be ravaged for content and probably sold by others.

where is my motivation to even spend the time required?

This isn't about gundam, I have said AD NAUSEUM, I care not about gundam's popularity, it is an infant of what it will be. What I care about is the culture here, which to me is close to a culture of theives.

the problem is most of the community seem to hate all that is not OTA (or BA specifically) people have some warped image of BA being like OTA when really its not but thats beside the point.

Basically unless its a BA clone with IP Free models most people will baaw about Original IP mods. Tho this is more evident in the lobby than the forum.

The main instigator of all this (excuse the pun) is people still thinking of spring as TAspring and not as engine.

I wish there was more IP free/independent mods

but the IP indepent mods we have dont have the gameplay that pleases the masses. The IP free mods arent BA.

I don't know about that ... isn't that the same in almost every community that works on software ?

Its not the most parts of the community. Its just the part that causes most of the forum drama.

For the record: I never touched (O)TA. Not even a goddamn demo.

The problem is the ota content tbh.

But, it's not going away, so what's the point in whining about it?

so what is expected of us content devs? Is it really scandalous that we have pet projects that reflect an aspect of some sort of fandom? I am sure I am not the only content dev doing fan work that has his own ideas for his own work in the future. I am not against sharing my work but the idea that someone could just turn around and sell it making a profit on my work brings to mind concerns on why should I commit so much effort to see someone else profit? I have no problem contributing to something free but contributing to something commercial actually goes against my grain.

I do not mean to start any kind on thread against the OTA content. I have expressed those views already. I am more wanting to discuss projects not relating to that. In mind I view the TA content as a dead end and want to focus on the future.

This may be opening a maaaaaaaassive can of worms, but assuming you made an original IP game, based on the extensive groundwork of Gundam, couldn't you gpl it to the point where nobody could steal it?

I'm fairly sure that I do not speak solely for myself in saying that there is a substantial base of users who contribute sweet fuck all to the project, but are immensely appreciative of people such as yourself who make this whole shebang possible.

Screw the trolls, and screw the fanbois and finish TD!

I am not worried about people stealing it. I am more than happy to share, eventually though the content I am pding will be enough to make a whole game in this engine. When that day comes I will be royally pissed when some takes that and sells it. I want to share to help people not give people money for taking someone else's work.

and on TD, after 1.2

The GPL guys have an agenda... asking them what is compatible with GPL is like asking Bernard Madoff whether it's safe to invest your money with him, tbh.

On topic: I haven't seen any raeg against SW:IW for being non-independent IP... heck I haven't seen any of this raeg which you're raeging against.

The "free-as-in-freedom" (aka "give-me-your-stuff-now") folks will be that way regardless of what you say. It's simply their belief system - anyone who doesn't immediately, completely, and totally release their code/art/content/soul to the public under the GPL or some compatible infectious license is committing blasphemy against all that is holy. Ignoring them is the best path IMO; they will neither change nor go away, but will continue to be their annoying, self-righteous selves.

Then so be it. If they don't want it that's going to be their problem, not ours. Hobby communities used to work on the "ask and ye shall receive" level, some people brought licenses into it and all we got out of it was whining and people worrying that certain public code is toxic. Screw the licenses, screw the goddamn "free software" movement, screw the dipshits who demand that everything is provided to them for free and proclaim that anyone not GPLing their code is worse than Hitler. If they keep saying that I may just as well build a camp and gas them all so I live up to the reputation they give me. Evo is CC-BY-SA-NC (or whatever the order for that is) and I don't see people complaining. Stick the CC-BY-NC on your work and call it a day, if the CA team can't use it then that's a problem of their own damn making.
