Icons are usually noise woe - ATI, Linux (s44 screens)

Spring is an awesome OS game. Good Job!

I have searched (not scoured) this forum and the new bug tracker and have not found anything relevant.

Symptoms - noise/weird/wrong icons. Sometimes troops show up as vehicles. Mortar icons always seem to work, but are too large IMO.

OS - Ubuntu 8.10 & 8.04
Thinkpad T60
dual core: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2400 @ 1.83GHz
Radeon mobility x1300
proprietary FGLRX ATI driver
xorg.conf has not been fiddled with. Some web sites suggest that this may help.

I have played with the render settings in spring at length, and can reduce the effect but not eliminate it to a usable level.

I have checked the LUA widget 'suitable s44 icon distance'

I figured that ATI was a poor choice and that I will have to wait till I get a better box to play this game which may be some time. Having mentioned this issue in the battleroom and learning that someone else has similar issues and the same GPU, I figured it might be worth posting here.

Anyone got any ideas? Is it my set-up or is it Spring?

see if the same problem occurs with other mods?

It works fine for me on 8.10 with an hd 4870, but then again, I have an hd 4870 :P

I googled for the error in my infolog and it lead me to this thread. My Problem is that Spring crashes when I want to build a structure. When I started "TestSpring" it crashes when the planes shoot their rockets. So it seems to be some particle-effect that crash...

I had deinstalled Spring for a few months and started playing the new Spring1944 version. When I started BA or CA it began with the crashes...

I could solve the problem by deinstalling spring and to overwrite the empty space with zeros and do other HDD-cleaning stuff..

But now, one day later, the problem is back. (Changing to low quality wont help)

these are the relevant parts which mean "your graphics drivers are too old".

there are no newer Mobility Drivers for my laptop. I tried to use the "driver heaven mobility modder" to modify the newest ATI reference driver but I it didnt work.

However... if execute the "test spring"application everything works fine... i can build structures and units can shoot. only if i want to play spring crashes...

can't help you then, i'm 99% sure it's the driver's fault.
