He did release some source. (almost all I'd guess, I suppose just youradick.exe is missing.)

Its somewhat alarming this got to happen, and raises the question about how safe is the current policy regulating "whos got the keys".

Whats even more alarming to me is that here are people (including developers) who defend and say it's not that big of a deal what happened.

The fact of the matter is that everyone who updated got a trojan distributed via tasclient update system, which atleast in my case broke the spring install, even after uninstall/reinstall and needed manual intervention to make it work again.

I am quite experienced in forking around with spring, so i got it to work. Just imagine the average Joe, who does not read the forums or play around with spring to be familiar with it. He has currently a broken spring, which won't get fixed if he doesn't know how to manually remove the various folders. I could imagine there are quite a few ppl out there fitting this criteria.

everybody can get fed up with certain things, but hey, this is the internet, you can't expect much love here, no matter what you do and who you listen to (or don't do and don't listen to, respectively). i'll be polite and say that what satirik has done was 1) unprofessional and 2) unnecessary.

I think Satirik didnt do this intentionaly.

Non were screaming before this did happend.

Non of the dephelopers are saying its ok.

Cooperation being discussed is a huge step in lobbydephelopment.

I don't think it's very easy to release a competitor's product accidentally, in place of your own

i think satirik did a great job updating tasclient from what it was back in betalords days to now. everybody who complains about current lobby should try out the ones before satirik must have put months of work into it. all he earned was some constant immature and unfriendly critic. so what he did was the right thing imo, perhaps people think twice before insulting his hard work next time, but when i read the posts here i dont really think so...

yes

Same as the engine devs earn, do you see them trying shit like this?
so what he did was the right thing imo
No it wasn't, the right thing to do would be for him to announce he no longer has time to maintain TASClient and then do nothing more.

If you can't manage to ignore a few insults, I suggest you find another Internet.

No. TASclient is thoroughly third party, no one involved with spring is defending Satirik. Based on his character I will tell you that there's a very small chance that he's going to or has used TASclient to install viruses to your machine, but when you download and install software programmed by someone, especially software that automatically updates itself you need to understand that that is a statement of trust in that developer that they aren't and won't do anything malicious with your machine.

Personally I'm going to be advocating against the inclusion of a satirik supported TASclient in our next installer... but fundamentally, spring doesn't control satirik or any other third party dev, our only power is whether we choose to support them or not in the inclusion of our installer.

There is no first party lobby client in spring at this point in time unfortunately.

i think it was a bit more than just a "few". i also think we should start respecting his and the other devs work much more instead of bashing them if something doesnt work immediately. some people dont seem to know that all devs work for "free" in their freetime and provide us the imo best rts-game ever.

He had an attitude of "screw off" to anyone with any sort of suggestion from the very beginning of his tasclient development days, caldera.

i know, he might have a bit difficult attitude sometimes, but thats not what i want to look at. its this community going crazy on devs on noobs on gamehosters, thats just shit.

Doesn't change the fact that you will have to tolerate insults (ignoring them is best) rather than try to attack them back with the means they've given you because they trust you.

You can't make everyone be nice to the developers, and thankfully the engine developers seems mature enough to realize this without the need to cause excessive amounts of internet drama.

I don't want to take away from the work Satirik has done. I still use TASclient (I don't update it), it's a good lobby client for the most part in features and function. The reality is though, we shouldn't be supporting third party developers who show they aren't trustworthy to support the interests of the project.

Satirik has done good work in the past, but it's an issue of trust.

But we should be able to use it for quite some time, even in worst case scenario, where there are no more updates.
Just to clarify... that's not the case, unless "quite some time" is until the next release of Spring (which, who knows, that may be months, although I'd like it to be sooner, it has some very important things in it already).

UnitSync stuff has been getting changed, apparently. Neither client is working with current Spring builds ATM. So this may be the end of TASClient.

So, you're saying it would correct for, let's say, Smoth or Argh or Fanger to find a way to make their mod display insults and render Spring unusable just because they were disrespected?

Find a way? Doing it with lua is trivial. >_>

Of course, lua is restricted to mucking up the spring directory, while a lobby can do anything.
