LINK TO WIKI MAIN AND MANTIS AGAIN!

Post by KDR_11k »

We have tons of links to all kinds of irrelevant Wiki pages but not a single one to the main page that links to all the other topics and we don't have a link to Mantis, instead you have to dig through the Wiki to even realize we HAVE a bugtracker.

Allcaps used because we had that topic before and noone fixed it.

I think the idea is that the main links are meant for laymen. The layman knows what they all mean:
Home = main page, News = news page, About = about the engine, Games = information about the games you can play, Development = stuff for devs, Media = screenshots, video, etc. Help = this shiat don't work, forums = BAWWWWWWWW, download = I want my filez.

Now, one could argue that "home" and "news" are kind of redundant since we have "news" on the front page, and "about" and "games" should be merged into the same page since they both serve the same function of "WTF is Spring? What do I do with this thing?"

Really, a Wiki doesn't need a main page - a main page is only by convention. The wiki has several main pages - the "Help" main page is a starting point for resolving problems, the "Games/About" main pages are a starting point for new users, and the "Development" main page is a starting point for developing. They are each a main page.

The main page is for all the things that are too numerous to throw into the heading. I'd rather have an index where I can go straight to the topic rather than navigating a web of links in the hope of finding one pointing me where I want to go. Also Mantis is for users so they can report bugs.

The main index is obsolete.

I took the contents of the main index and split them, one half was copied to the development page, the other to the help page. The development and help page have every single link the main index page has. Any justification that relies on the 'missing links' theory is absolute nonsense. Its all there its just on 2 pages not 1.

Also if you had bothered looking there is a big link to mantis at the side of the development and the help pages saying report bugs/submit patches.

Think before you speak.

AF if there was a nice button for bug reporting that linked to mantis it would be a lot easier to get users to submit bugs yes.

Agree with Smoth. A nice "report bugs" button in the bar would probably be nice... although we don't maintain Mantis, so I don't know if it would crapflood then.

Agreed but its a bit farfetched to say its not linked to fullstop, and Im tired of this wiki index MTR thing that pops up from people who have obviously not even looked at the index and the dev+help pages or theyd know what theyre saying is silly!

Well I generally find an Index page to be something useful, but of course there's no problem in creating that on the wiki... (and linking to it from various other wiki pages).

I guess the point to argue is whether there should be a link to the index in the top tab - I certainly wouldn't use the term "main", I think it would have to be "sitemap" or "index". I for one think that's something helpful, but I do see other opinions as valid as well.

Also, I agree the "News" tab is superflous in its current form.

Sean

(P.S. can't comment on Mantis, cause I know too little about it)

The main index page was terrible at doing what everybody used it for. A sitemap would be far more efficient and helpful.

Mantis account creation has been up and down recently, was fixed viewtopic.php?f=12&t=17465 but I guess the bug must be back. I guess you should go ahead and bump that thread.

Anyway, I think linking the wiki and bugtracker pages on top bar makes sense. They should either be 100% in use or 100% dead, not in this sort of undead limbo where some people are still using them but they're totally buried so newbies can't find them.

Also it would be nice if PHPBB accounts worked for Mantis, so you'd have a single sign on, maybe even across to the lobby too.

There is another side of introducing a big & bright button to MANTIS. According to some popular project (QIP) news the administrators had to close bugtracker cause people converted it into a forum :) So, if a bugtracker will be accessed not so evidently, then you have more chances that more quality reports will be inputed there instead of tons of stupid "it does not work, fix it PLEASE!!!!!!!!!" topics.

You're warned :)
