They make the same sound when I say the word, it's just that the first e is longer.

Kurrrrnul!
You're right. I was lazy when writing my post, and only did a check if they had an exact match. The first one is different from the r-meld, not because it's an e sound. So two schwas, now I have no reason for the misspelling...

FragHawk, are you looking for something along the lines of this ?: http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/Freely_a ... le_content

That stuff should both be TA free and free to use (licences various or are missing at time, but only stuff that the makers have said "use it" for is listed).

The list is by no means complete by the way, there are actually a few threads on the topic with stuff that I had wanted to add sometime...

All annoying dudes who talk about the lack of "free games" are condemned by the High Judge of Doom to host Kernel Panic, or whatever non TA-related Games twice a day for the following millennium.

It's because it's an irregular spelling, most words that follow the n├ëÔäól pronunciation pattern are Latin-derived and the final vowel is an A whose pronunciation has regularly shifted to schwa in English. I assume that kernel has an Anglo-Saxon or some other non-Latin root.

i.e. infernal, nocturnal, tribunal

My post was more highlighting the regional pronunciation differences, in my Southern dialect it's more like "kurrnul" than anything else, which clearly isn't the standard pronunciation.

Wiktionary says that the vowels are in fact different: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/kernel

Everyone who ever worked on the mod knew what a kernel (in computers) was before they heard about kp. Most people hanging in the lobby, however, didn't. So they remember the term by pronounciation, and then misspell it as you described. Mystery solved!

Thanks for this! I was wondering about the frequent misspellings myself.

Ontopic? Offtopic? I don't know, but Felix little rant about how people year by year to a greater extent REQUIRE intellectual property to be free in every respect one might imagine initially triggered a reaction for me like "good fun as sarcasm but bullsh... as description of reality".

Then I recalled what happened with my attempt to probe the licensing situation for that fun mod "Operation Polaris". The intent were to check out how "free" the code were to mess around with, mostly in order to play around with it and learn it, preferably without worrying that I violated any license and with the ultimate goal of contributing to the mod with whatever I could provide (coding, modelling, texturing...). Given the mod's relative low complexity in some regards (but not in some others) I found it rather appealing to poke around with it. Unfortunately, and probably an indication that Felix' rant actually have some sad truth in it, the discussion very quickly derailed into a discussion whether or not it was ethically ok for Centipede to have a non-free license for the game and reserve his/their rights to their intellectual property.

Too bad, as I have a creepy feeling that discussion had a bad impact on Centipede's motivation to continue working with that mod (or keeping it on the Spring engine). Hopefully my creepy feeling is very wrong. Also, I did not really get any good idea of my options for doing some constructive "messing around" with the mod thanks to the derailement of the thread...

Understandable, who'd want to work for a bunch of morons who complain that you didn't give them the whole arm when you lend them a hand?

"Hay guys, I made you something.." "How dare you! You have to give us everything you own for the privilege of making us something!"

Sound explanation. Thanks.

Under wasn't chased away he hated you already. However he's been missing from IRC for the past weeks and some are getting worried something might have happened to him IRL.

There are plenty of free games besides Kernel Panic!

Try Spring:1944, and Evolution RTS for starters. About six others are in active development but private testing.
