sadly id say that games are probably responsible for the rise in A.D.D
and even if its not, its defiantly the reason people get bored so quickly now a days

probably not strategy games, but shooters and what not, really if you think about it, its like having a person use a reflex tester 3 hours straight with flashing lights and blaring gun fire there whole life.

there are hardly any games left that reward patience, and well thought out planing. basically the traits that make people successful in life.

although I suppose better reflexes in a combat situation would be invaluable, but jumping around randomly and fighting over who gets the rocket launcher probably wouldn't.

Does not apply to spring. Proof: DSD. :P

Like the article on expert minds stated, experts do the correct decisions not because they patiently consider every option, but because they consider the right option immediately. I confess I do actually less thinking while playing than when I started. At least consciously.

Anyway, I was under the impression patience and planning will only get you so far, you need initiative and efficiency too. Especially in the job market. So imo fast-paced entertainment is not the sole reason for ADD. Headshotting can actually relieve stress. :P

MMOs require tons of patience for grinding and tons of planning to get the right speced out character. Saying that, I also submit that MMOs have no bearing if not a negative influence on the lives of their players.

The time you actually spend thinking compared to the time you just press the same button combination and grind is huge...I bet the brain is more active during sleep than when you play an mmo..

The researchers actually did some secret research for the US armed forces as well. They developed the following career table as a result:

Code: Select all

Top Secret USAF9874//df5-5

Game played Military Role Notes
------------ ----------- ----------
Spring General Superior command skills
Other RTS Lieutenant Good command, but poor judgement
Counterstrike Sniper Only effective with AWP
Flight Sims Pilot Flight systems must be bolted to chair
Vista Gamers Kamikaze Dumb but loyal. Obey all orders without question
Wii Games Runner The only gamers fit enough
Guitar Hero Spy Immune to torture
FPS Rejected Incapable of teamwork
Console Games Rejected Too young
DOS Games Rejected Too old
MMORPGs Rejected Addicts
Linux Gamers Rejected Never played a game before

People with A.D.D. have amazing puzzle solving skills, And A.D.D. (back in more hectic times) probably was invaluable when you had to have quick reflexes and a lot of energy to survive. Nowadays, were sitting quietly listening is the foundation of education, it is such a counterproductive trait, it is labeled a disorder.
And inarguably videogames are bad for kids with A.D.D., seeing as they run an extremely high chance of "getting Addicted".
I'm just wondering if the rise in people diagnosed with A.D.D. is part of a witch hunt, or if society can actually make a person have A.D.D.

Shooters vs. TV. hmmm├óÔé¼┬ª. I guess it depends, id say watching an episode of Nova is probably better than t-bagging some dude after you blow him away with a 12 gauge. but an episode of American Idle.. probably not.

MORPG are bad, not so much in mental impacts, but because they are an unhealthy way of filling peoples social needs (I guess like talking on a forum), ultimately worsening there real life relationships. Also they tend to be quite time consuming and highly ├óÔé¼┼ôaddictive├óÔé¼┬Ø seeing as how they use the exact same method of random rewarding actions as gambling. Plus id say MMORPGs are the only game people actually can get addicted to, which reflects poorly on the gaming community as a hole.

There is Balance in everything, the Lord gave, the Lord takes- even if you know you loose, could you give it up anyway? Pointless Discussion, but wait, if we could make Spring the Hype of the Year 2099, like GTA 23... no, sorry if you suddenly experienced high hopes for a second..

Responsible for ADD? Not a chance, I know a whole lot of people who hardly play games at all who look like they take methamphetamine on a daily basis.
