download map from battlehost

Post by Justin Case »

There ought to be a optional feature allowing players to download the map from the battlehost. It can be a bit tricky and cumbersome to find and download the map on the web.

I`m not the right person to say, but I think you can already do that, and the maps are all on one page at File Universe.

But downloading of FU is not really what Justin was asking for. The ability to download maps from the Battle Host, not FU. Say that you and a mate are testing a new map you made. You havn't put it on FU yet. Downloading through th client could be helpful. The choice to download the map from either FU (preffered option) or the Battle Host (non-prefered option) would be good. You would have to be carefull though, you COULD very easily hide 'Suspicious Files' in an sd7 archive.

one simple problem, TOO DAMNED SLOW
Most maps are FREAKING HUGE with WAY to high quality graphics. 30mb AT LEAST.
With a conventional upload, even with high speed, it will take a WHILE to download. If it had some sort of reliable link or transfer service this may be possible, (bit torrents if the popularity gets high enough) but not at present.

I don't think there are any maps over 30 MB yet in the new map format, and only a handful more than 10 MB. We've had far fewer problems getting maps on FU since the NMF was created, since the maps come out to a smaller filesize and people are able to upload them on their own.

Perhaps Bittorrent could be incorporated into the client, so that everyone in the battleroom can upload the map to the person who doesn't have it. That should help solve the slowness.

Or at least the ability to throw arbitrary files around thru p2p randomly should we wish it

getting maps (within the client) is already so easy that anything else is redundant.

Sorry I haven't installed the new versions yet, so I didn't know of the recent drop in filesize.
