UI icons disappear

When I play some mods the UI disappears almost completely after a short while.

I've read that it may have something to do with holding shift or queing stuff, but none of the fixes I've seen has worked so far. I've checked out these two topics:

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800, NVidia GeForce 7800GT and Windows XP SP2 (32bit). I think I have the latest NVidia driver.
