limit player number to 8-10 per game.

limit player number to 8-10 per game.
There aren't many left to agree with me but there are hardly any good players left in spring.
I suggest Limiting the cap of players back to 8-10 so that game quality improves and games become more competitive and skill based.
I think that if this is done the player base will start playing better and we will also see a revival of ladder and 1v1 games.
I suggest that as many OTA based mods as possible will have this cap and i will of course change SA as well.
The lobbies can be made to support this if need be.
About people releasing versions of mods with higher player caps.
I think it will not work but i also think the community itself should discourage it and that's also the reason i am creating this thread.
Smaller games will mean better cooperation between players, more chances of newbies learning things from better players and maybe the revival of some sort of competitive sub community?
I wanna point out that this is not about a certain map like DSD for example.
I like DSD myself and i understand that there must be a few popular maps just like in every community.
Its about player counts...

Another point, even though its less important,is the fact that it is also easier to balance smaller games(tweaking after autobalance) since you need to take into account and balance one versus the other less players overall.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
Why not?don't just say no explain yourself.
Whats the advantage of having 8v8 games in OTA based mods?
Sure in mods like War Evolution and other mods where you only control one unit,16 players and even 32 players is fine but not in OTA based mods.

the host can already limit number of players in the lobby,
let players decide what is most fun for themselves.
personal choice FTW

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
Isn't it about improving gameplay?it can be 32 as well but will it improve the experience?8 player cap will make newbies learn to play better....
Its all hype.
OMG huge game 100 players!! join quick...but the result is worse.
There was no outcry about making a bigger cap when it was 8 and newbies don't know whats better...They just see a game with most players and join in.
There must be a balance between desire to play big games and keeping player level at a certain minimum..
In big games individual efforts are much less accentuated and good and smart moves go unnoticed.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
If you want a mod based solution, you should talk to aegis to see if he can use the modoption to cap the max player server-side.
Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
What's wrong with a 100 player game? Provided all the computers can handle it and it's a non-combomb game.
Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
amazingly i agree, but the option is there - just set max players to 8 and you're done. most spring players like huge porcfests and have no intention of becoming pro koreans. it's got something to do with different concepts of fun, which you can't really do anything about.
Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
I would be very happy to have 8 players cap.
But! i think it's up to each individual player to decide what kind of games they want to play. So if they want 50v50, let them, they won't see me playing there tho. Big games are newb friendly and they probably keep new players from cutting their wrists in 2 days after installing spring.
I completely agree that there's not many good players left. There's nothing you can do tho, beside making some clan and gather players with potential to improve fast.
Or you could just wait, till spring naturally evolves after DSD's bottomless barrel of fun runs out of fun.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
But that's the point.
I argue that capping at 8 will raise the level of play...
losing is what makes someone improve..The more players are in the game the less losing matters cause its less personal.
there is nothing wrong with 100 player games but not for OTA based mods..
People join big games out of a perception that more is better but what it does is,it makes people play worse and the overall quality of games drops...
a lose isn't as important nay more and the stimulation to play better drops.
All I'm saying is that 8 player cap for OTA based mods is a good balance between big battles and good gameplay.
IM saying lets drop all OTA games to 8 player caps cause it makes for better games and in the end more fun as peopel learn to play better.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
This idea fails so hard it punched a hole in the ground. The engine is not there to enforce your personal ideas of good gameplay or behaviour! Engines are tools to implement your game, the only thing an engine should do is provide features needed for game development. If you want to restrict your mod to 8 players then write a gadget that autokills any team over 8. The engine is a shared resource, it shouldn't follow anyone's whims of how it should be for his game design. More features are nice, sure but keep them optional.
As for your expectation about the uptake, considering how well all your other ideas went down with mod developers I'd guess that NOONE would actually set a max player limit.
For a universal system I'd also want control over the factions a player can set, the allyteam he can belong to (e.g. for a CoH-style system where allyteam 1 can only be allies and allyteam 2 can only be axis and no other allyteams are allowed) and possibly also adding per-player and per-team mod options (like the subfactions found in Emperor: Battle For Dune).
However if we're going to discuss features instead of Gota's stupidity this belongs in Feature Requests.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
I never said to change the engine...
Where did i write that?
I specify said OTA based mods and talked about lobby support for this..
Obviously if the engine changed there would be no need for some special lobby support of this..
I was talking to OTA based modders and players.
If most wont do it together it wont work.
next time instead of going completely berserk read my post properly..
Your just discrediting my idea with completely irrelevant arguments that just stray from the point.

Re: limit player number to 8 per game.
The lobby is an interface for the engine and I consider it pretty much a part of the toolset. Leaving aside that the limit in OTA was 10 players I suppose you want a tag in the mod for the player limit rather than autodetecting if something is TA-based and forcing a maximum of 8 then?
As I said, I'd rather have a generalized system for having mods influence the options a player has in the lobby including team, allyteam, faction, handicap, etc.

In fact, next major release will support up to 251 players per game

Basic, you act as if you're a brilliant player yourself, which is laughable to say the least.
Now i've argued this many times about peoples ideas of fun must = everyones elses. Just because you may think 1v1s or 4v4s are more intense gameplay than the likes of 8v8s doesn't mean everyone else feels exactly the same.
I've been playing spring for a while now and i'd like to say im pretty decent at both large and small games, but for me persanaly i'd rather play large games due to the fun-aspect. I also feel that i've had more skillfull games in a large game than i have in small ones.
Like i've said to some people about making things offical when they are logicaly not. If you only allow one type of gameplay, that being a most of the spring community to only play 4v4s maximum, you will lose atleast 50% of the community within days. It's a hard fact that most of the community only play large DSD games and other similar maps, if you take that away, DSD will disapear and so will 90% of the people who play it.
To conclude on your idea that DSD and many large maps should be allowed to play with more than 4v4 due to the tactics of the maps then whats your point anyway? Because people only play those type of maps anyway, any other map and you're playing 4v4s anyway.

I don't think people will stop playing if you make a cap of 8 or 10 players.Spawn_Retard wrote:Basic, you act as if you're a brilliant player yourself, which is laughable to say the least.

I don't see why that would happen at all remembering that it was like that a while ago and we had plenty of players...
The only thing that changed from when we had a lower cap is the avarage player skill.
I'm not sure who you are in the lobby but i consider myself and average plus player back when spring had good players..
I didn't understand your post or the point you were making TBH.

I dont care how its done...KDR_11k wrote:The lobby is an interface for the engine and I consider it pretty much a part of the toolset. AS long as its not possible to play OTA based mods with more than 8-10 people.I suppose it should be somehow selected in the mod and the lobby should support it but there might be better ways like what you suggested.
The point is the question if such a cap would benefit the userbase and would make OTA based mods play on a higher level of skill.
I think 8-10 player cap is a good balance between the fun of having many players in a game and the ability to maintain some order, cooperation, noob friendliness and
eventually the overall avarage skill of players.
