Replays are so much fun.
The process of getting old replays to work could be a little more streamlined though. This is probably more a Lobby than an engine thing.
When trying to open a replay without having the resources it should display the spring version, map and mod you need to open it, preferably with a convenient download link included. The files could be stored in a demos subfolder. In the end, you should be able to launch replays with different spring versions directly from the lobby replay list.

Re: Better support for old replays
TASClient handles old replays since version 0.34 :
- extract that : http://spring.jobjol.nl/show_file.php?id=872 to your spring dir (it includes spring version from 0.71b1 to 0.75b2, if you need another version make a dir with the corresponding version number, 0.76b1 0.76b2 ... 0.77b5 .. ) and put a working spring version inside: exe + content etc)
- watch a replay from tasclient it will open the right spring version, it will try to copy the map and the mod to the right folder if it doesn't exist
