I vote XTA, since OTA has underpowerd units, and dosen't work to well with spring phycis.

Really both mods are fun, and I'm willing to play them both... But I prefer XTA. OTA's balance is VERY harsh against core in the early game and very harsh against arm in the late game. Not only that, but until someone has krogoth it is largely a generic swarm style game (except for brawlies) where who ever has the largest generic swarm is most likely winner. It's paper rock scissors balance is broken and it really doesn't work, probably because it was never balanced with unit tweaks and only the addition of new units. The balance method also leaves many OTA units compleatly useless because they are trumped by added units that were included soully to counter more powerful versions of them. Also spring game mechanics kind of break alot of the features OTA was balanced around.

This is immensely silly, and I recommend a close.
Frankly, if OTA gets anywhere near XTA, it would be a win for OTA.
How can a mod compete in popularity when the latter comes packed with the game, while the former requires a download and a new set of learning?
Another important factor is that many of the original OTA fans have left Spring, because they have become disenfranchised (see this thread) with the changes that have been made, which they feel "ruins" the OTA balance. Hence the majority of OTA players have left, which is no indication on the actual strength of the OTA mod itself, or the weakness of the XTA one.
Finally, if we were to judge how good a mod is on sheer popularity, we'd all be playing StarCraft, and not TA, right now.

How can someone hate Spring? Its free, its threedee AND its got other people playing it too!
TA comming with it is great, but not the only draw! There is TAFF, WD and SWTA! More mods are on the horizon and, best of all, the game improves every patch, and a new patch comes out ever couple of weeks. Whats not to like?

New players like me owning you left right and center because you can't adapt to new systems...Zoombie wrote:How can someone hate Spring? Its free, its threedee AND its got other people playing it too!

Its much more civilized than what other ppl does, complainig everywhere about the xta balance.Warlord Zsinj wrote:This is immensely silly, and I recommend a close.
OTA is definetly not adapted to spring, units cant climb almost any hill.
Many ranges are silly, like most lrms and artillery (dominators mortys..).
The basic plasma cannon does have much longer range than this units, which means you need a lot more of them or a continous stream of infantry/ranged units to take the cannons out. which leads to more carnage.
Not likely 3 dominators take out a guardian.
The original game was very unblanced, with overpowered units, like the maverick (1 mav vs commander, dead commader for sure.), fidos (huge range, good armor, and powerfull shot) samsons... ,that mixed with units that were underpowered/flawed (like the A.K. slow, very low damage and weak, zeus,DDM, too slow) killed the gameplay.
lvl1 core units where very underpowered agains arm counterparts, (im really not sure about the costs, bc that could make a difference, but think they where quite even between sides.).
Actuall i was never good, even at OTASwiftSpear wrote:New players like me owning you left right and center because you can't adapt to new systems...Zoombie wrote:How can someone hate Spring? Its free, its threedee AND its got other people playing it too!

That's probably why you don't hate XTA so much. It seems that the players with the most resistance to spring are the ones who were the most established as TA players. Give them a proper balance scheme to compeat on and they are compleatly lost. It gets me every time someone says that OTA is more balanced then XTA is, because even on the old engine the balance that OTA had isn't even comparable to the current balance of XTA. And the SY's aren't even finished with XTA yet.Zoombie wrote:Actuall i was never good, even at OTASwiftSpear wrote:New players like me owning you left right and center because you can't adapt to new systems...Zoombie wrote:How can someone hate Spring? OTA was never balanced since it was first constructed, the only balancing ever done was adding new units. It's the rediculous sentament that the cavedog guys got everything right the first time that is the reason you're lucky if TA has more then one game going at a time right now, where starcraft has people still making a living off of being good at the game.
hmm, it's going better for OTA then i thougt really.
Oh, and this treadh is for what you like best BETWEEN there 2 mods. If someone tied you to a chair, pointed a gun at you and ''said " PLAY!" and there where only these 2 mods avibole, what would you pick.
This, to end all discusion to show tha majority of sping players like XTA most.
Oh, and i would love if pepole would love if pepole who voted posted to...
IT END'S NOW!

I have to admit I can't really vote on that one. I don't play often enough to compare the two mods, so I stick to XTA because then I'm sure to find a game. I think it plays fine, but I still have to understand all the possible uses for the units. The big advantage of XTA is that it gets constantly rebalanced, contrary to OTA for which development had stopped and which wasn't open source.
In the original TA game I played almost everything but OTA: at the minimum TA Bugfix, but I preferred Uberhack, AA, UTASP, and many other units packs. I played mainly cooperative against the AI, mind you, so it was a more leisurely style of play than the current competitive multiplayer.
OTA mod could have some success if a team of people took up the task of constantly re-balancing it to make it work ok with Spring. It's silly to think that a simple cut-and-paste from the original game will have great balance in Spring.
