can't load libunitsync.so

I've directed springlobby to /usr/games/lib/libunitsync.so which is the correct path, but it fails with the console output:

Error: File not found: /usr/games/lib/libunitsync.so

The permissions on libunitsync.so are as follows:

-rwxr-x--- 1 root games 909752 Jan 3 19:40 libunitsync.so

and my user is in the games group. This is on Gentoo installed using layman and portage per the guide on this website.
