So here it is, merry christmas....
Or happy agnostica, or happy holidays, or whatever else it is you celebrate...
Either way, happy christmas from me and well wishes for the new year.

Indeed.
This one's more particularly "on the day" comments, though.

Anything that has such a resounding community support can't help but fail. <_<

Happy holidays guys.

Happy Santa Day.
If you're down with Jesus, cool, sing some songs in praise of his birth.
Otherwise, just make merry for a moment, unless your culture doesn't really care, in which case, make merry when it's appropriate.
And... if you think life's been a little rough this year, and you're feeling a little down, maybe the stockings aren't so full... just remember the girl I bought stuff from at the gas station today- working people, for whom today is just another workday. Remember the folks in China, breaking up old circuit boards over fires to try and recover the precious metals.
And finally... remember that there are a lot of people out there, who don't have computers, don't even know what the Internet is, and who would regard our ability to communicate and collaborate and share our minds like this for what it is- an awesome privilege.
I don't care what deity you like, what holy book you read, what your background is- take a minute, and be thankful, that you are actually able to be here, and that you're part of the global civilization that, with all its follies, made this possible.

Wow - amazing how this has a subtone to me you most certainly didn't want it to have at all. The last thing I feel pitty for Chinese people would be that they "have to" recycle stuff. It's actually a pretty noble task...Argh wrote:Remember the folks in China, breaking up old circuit boards over fires to try and recover the precious metals.

The computer part immediately made me think of some tribes living out there - to my mind probably a life more happy than for oh so many people in our "civilized world" - not knowing about Internet & stuff needn't be something bad...
Nevertheless I wish you all a good time wherever and whoever you are! And don't eat as much as I did - seriously...

Re: So here it is, merry christmas....
the thing you are forgetting krog is that some of the compounds in electronic components are pretty nasty, and the fumes that get let off when you heat them up/set them on fire are quite toxic. and theres no safety regulations or anything, if they are lucky they have a rag ove their mouth and nose.
some of these recycling 'programs' are causing major harm to whole areas. plastic from the UK gets shipped to China, and melted down. The fumes from doing this are slowly killing the workers, and the people in the surrounding town...
would you be willing to die or let yourfamily be slowly poisoned just so that someone on the other side of the world can feel better having recycled their empty coke bottles?

Re: So here it is, merry christmas....
Yes, the electronics "recycling" operations are really, really horrible.
At any rate, I was just trying to point out that... no matter how bad this year has been (mine's been pretty bad) I can still find reasons to be grateful. If anything, I feel more grateful this year than I ever have before, because I had some very rough times after I lost my cool job just before Christmas last year, and I've survived somehow.
So, I counted my blessings. I have decent food, I have electricity and clean running water. I have a reasonably-powerful computer and high-speed Internet access and a working automobile. I have a loving family and friends... and that's it- but it's more than a lot of people will ever have.

@Argh & Pressure Line:
Sure - without any health precautions it's not a nice job but well that's the case for every job where your work is worth more than your life and my impression is that this sadly is a common spirit especially in lots of branches of the Chinese economy. Might be a matter of "taste" but there imo are lots of things you should fear more. It's a pity nevertheless...
I also understood the way you meant your posting and wish you a nice conclusion of the festive days!

do you HAVE to comment on every thread that goes even a little off topic Hoi? Seriously, stop it, it was annoying when Trademark did it, and its annoying when you do it.Hoi wrote:Wow. It's just amazing how people got from merry christmas to chineese people recycling stuff
Re: So here it is, merry christmas....
I don't have any problem with topics going off topic.
Re: So here it is, merry christmas....
The chinese can spare the manpower...
If someone has to do id prefer they did.
They have much more men than women in china so in a way its a bit of a positive thing.
And you better blame the corporations in your countries for exploiting workers in countries that haven't got laws to correctly protect workers.
It's kinda funny TBH that China of all countries would treat its workers in such a shitty way.
Oh and you better blame yourself for over consuming and buying products that aren't meant to last but to be replaced as fast as possible...
The chinese workers need to be protected from the western way of life and business.
And than these few countries stand in shock and wonder why they are hated.
