So what's all this about???
I am new to this but I was a HUGE fan of the Original Total Annihilation! I stumbled upon this website trying to DL the Original version of TA. I'm still a bit confused and I'm just asking what's all this about??
This is a site about the game engine Spring. It is a 3D RTS game engine, that looks really good. The main mod for this engine is a modified version of the original TA game (reffered to as OTA on this board), XTA developed by the Swedish Yankspankers(SY's), who made the Spring engine. You can also play the OTA mod, UH(Uberhack, another OTA mod), WD(Ditto), and various others. It is still in development, but is very playable, and works very well. If you have played OTA, then you will quicly pick this up, and many OTA players have found this and loved it (including me)

TA spring is a 3D manifestation of the original TA engine. Make no mistake however, TAS is not TA. The similarities between what the TA engine did and what the spring engine does end at units that look the same. The metal extracting system has been totally restructured (the old way still works but there is an entirely new alternitive) weapon that colide with friendly collision spheres do damage rather then passing over like they did in TA, and in general the whole way units interact with the world around them is totally changed in this manefestation in full 3D.
On top of all that, the primary game mode for TA spring is not the balance game that OTA (standing for old TA) was. XTA (extream TA?) totally rearranges the unit roles, strenghts, and weaknesses to ensure strong paper rock scissors style stratigic balance is maintained in the game, as well leveling out the two sides in both late and early game (core is no longer useless in the early game and arm is no longer pitiful in the end game) If you're used to TA it will take some playing to get the hang of how all the familiar feeling units now play so differently.
However, it isn't all scary new changes. There are several mods for TAS that retain the old TA balance, and the scripting engines, mapping capabilites, and team design strucutres are still almost identical to the original TA.
If you have a decent PC definately pick up the latest build and come and play a few rounds with us. The multiplayer support is great and we're always looking for new players to pound :D
Maby TAS can trigger some of that addictive flare that had you looking for old TA downloads in the first place. I know it did for me
