strange error when joining games

Hi,

I have just installed Spring on Ubuntu 8.10 from the packages detailed on the Ubuntu page of the wiki. This went fine, but when I run Springlobby or try to join a game i get the message

"Couldn't get your Spring versions from any unitsync library.
Online play is currently disabled."

I can play single player games fine, i just can't connect to multiplayer ones.

I've tried reinstalling the packages, but i'm a bit of a linux noob and i don't have a clue what to try next.
