unneccesary, unless you have no short term memory (in which case your problems are likely to be greater than failing to remember unit names)
its only an issue for mods without either a systematic (arm_scoutplane etc) or unitfilename == ingamename (arm_peeper etc) naming system (ie TA based)
if its your mod, with your content, you should not have any trouble remembering your unit names. because if you cant remember what they are called and what they do, how is anyone else going to?
and you ALWAYS have the option of choosing better unit names, even with TA content. because you cannot be bothered changing them (or memorising them, Caydr did it, you can too) doesnt mean it isnt an option.

Short term memory is great, but lets all remember that it hasnt got an infinite capacity, and if we keep saying 'just use short term memory' we're going to quickly run into buffer overflows in that head of yours!!

What does all this bullshit mean?
Having the unit name would be very useful for modding and cheating purposes. I put it on my custom tooltip that I use.

i used to hold the product codes (or at least the formulae for them) at my old job, and we are talking about a warehouse with over 1000 discrete items here. im sure most people, with an average short term memory can remember the unit names for a mod (again, talking about non-TA based here, OTA internal short names are insane)AF wrote:Short term memory is great, but lets all remember that it hasnt got an infinite capacity, and if we keep saying 'just use short term memory' we're going to quickly run into buffer overflows in that head of yours!!
and, if you are seriously working on a mod, its highly likely you are interested in it, and thus paying more attention, so are more likely to remember things. theres the whole short->long term memory transfer thing, if you are modding, its likely to take some time, so you are going to be storing things (like unit names) in your long term memory as well.
this is all by-the-by, if Trib has got it in his custom TT, may as well make it optional to turn on (no point having it on by default imo, its not really necessary for regular play)

Unit names would never be stored in short term memory. The brain isn't a computer in the same design of a PC, you don't really run out of memory space, old memory doesn't get deleted it just gets decreased in priority. Short term memory only really holds items for a few seconds, anything you remember is likely to be attributed to long term memory.
A human can have hundreds of thousands of items committed to long term memory at a reasonably fast recall time.

Make sure the build ETA applies to stuff being stockpiled.
Also, how about a big display on EMP paralyzed units showing how long till they snap out of it?
I know both of those are shown in different widgets, but the text is small enough you need to zoom in, not the best for strategic use. The context sensitive tooltip should show either show up fast or by key press to get an instant status query on a unit while zoomed out.
