This is definately the best idea of how to handle the issue, but hopefully the feature is included with some content, and not just dumped into the game as a skeleton. Official SY tracks would own.Warlord Zsinj wrote:As I posted in my own thread regarding music, located here:

Basically, as soon as they put the ability to put music in, people will be making mp3 packs and throwing them on fileuniverse for other's to use. I know I will.
As long as the music is a simple means of being organised in any one of the following directories:
TASpring/Music/Defeat
TASpring/Music/Victory
TASpring/Music/Tension
TASpring/Music/Battle
mp3 files (orr .ogg and others, people wanted a number of supported filetypes) would simply be read in those directories by Spring. Spring would use simple algorithms to determine when a side is winning or losing or whatever (discussed in the thread linked to above), and then simply picks a track randomly from those directories.
Is original music needed?

I was also looking into it, but haven't had much time in the code section. I DO have a nice chunk of LEGAL classical music that could be used.
And can get LEGAL other music aswell. Just tell me the type of music and the style, (no specific song requests, but try to compair it to an OTA track) I'll look into it.

The skeleton would be just the feature without any included content. If content was included the skeleton would still be there, you just would have the option of either keeping the official music files or replacing it with your own, or even mixing the two together in some bizzare unholy combination.Min3mat wrote:skeleton would own as u could customize it, eg. i'm in a chill out mood today i'll play the chilli's and porc or i feel agressive today i'll play some emo and school some noobs :) that would rock :)
I know from my prespective at least I probably wouldn't want to build my own soundtrack when a perfectly acceptable official one is already there. I don't like work

A-freakin'-men. TA's soundtrack being classical is not disputable. Not that there's anything wrong with other styles of music for an RTS (I always liked StarCraft's selection) but they're not TA.FizWizz wrote:umm, everyone?Min3mat wrote:who said anything about classical?
The problem will be finding classical music that is:
a) free for reuse - I don't think anybody has an orchestra handy to perform Strauss with.
b) good audio quality
c) appropriate for TA - no little violin quartets performing Bach.
d) we haven't heard 6000 times. As much as I think "Dance of the Sugar Plum Faeries" would be fun for build-time, I don't think I'd want to hear it over and over. And before anyone suggests it, I've already seen a ton of games that used "Mars" - we're all sick of it.

Look under both classical, ambient and some techno.

Ever wonder why games don't have any singing or voice? Because it is going to cause confusion with players. Imagine trying to listen to important dialog and the music is a spoken word track.
Thus thats why games tend to have the same types of music, ie the types that sound good without someone singing.
pff emo? nonsense.

Emo?? Thats the worst idea ever. CLASICAL MUSIC. I mean, llok at it like this... TA and Homeworld both rocked, and half of it was sown to the wicked soundtrack! Starcrafts sound track was fine for what it was, but starcraft is not a dramatic game, this is and needs that dramatic punch only Clasical music can give...

Homeworld had classical music? I must go listen to it! I think mod-specific music would be good, but any music would drastically increse the file size, so im not sure if its a good idea to have music come with the game. But an ingame system for playing music is another matter, as it could be quite handy.
Idunno, I've heard some games with vocals in the music. Sonic Adventure II had some decent generic lite-punk (with vocals) for Sonic's levels and some incredibly painful hip-hop (with vocals) for Knuckles' levels. It seems to work just fine for Sonic... but I think with vocals the repetition of hearing the same song over and over again really gets to you.DopeFishhh wrote:Ever wonder why games don't have any singing or voice? Homeworld had that really cool choral section that rocked your socks off, but that's not exactly classical, and it was only triggered in various parts of the campaign =(. TA had cool stuff, and the track for the Terrans in StarCraft that came with Broodwar was cool too. I think the best soundtrack ever, beyond any dispute, is the Terran soundtrack for Conquest: Frontier Wars. It had a big bad brass section doing an awesome 'military' composition, and I'd love to upload it, but I wouldn't know the first thing about dissecting the file that it's encoded into.

O Fortuna playing during Spring would just be awesome.
I think the problem is only when the lyrics in the music are in your own language.
I really hope we get to dump whatever music we want into folders that play at different situations in the game, like a few people have sujjested.
My tense music is definitely going to include O Fortuna...
And my victory music will be Ode to Joy.
