ATI cards

Post by Muzic »

Are they any good with Spring now? Is the OpenGL support with ATI good? Becuase I remember a long while back radeon cards couldn't do everything nvidia cards could becuase of OpenGL.

The only thing my ATI HD4850 doesn't do is shadows and dynamic water. It will do BumpWater from the next version of Spring, though, which is nicer than dynamic water, thanks to jK. All the awesome LUPS effects jK made for CA work perfectly, too.

For me, Spring will only work *at all* with my ATI card (4870) if I run it windowed or I revert to 4.6 drivers, which cause their own problems. Honestly, I wish I'd stuck with NVIDIA. Curse ATI and their value for money!

I think you mean 8.6, Also, what OS? If Spring runs out of the box on Linux + ATI, then I find it odd it doesn't work for you.

Sorry, yes. It's on Vista 64-bit. If I use the 8.7 or 8.8 and have Spring set to launch full-screen, when the game launches the screen goes black for a moment then returns to desktop. Spring is running, but I have no way to task-switch to it, so I have to kill the process. With the 8.6 drivers, this also starts happening eventually, but a reboot solves it for a while.

I own a 4870 too and so far had no problems. The shadows didn't work anymore since the Catalyst 7.11 but that's no big deal as they weren't really usable after all because of extremely poor performance. Not having dynamic water was a little downside (although I don't know too much of how performant it is) but as said we'll get something more nice soon...

It seems though that with the current version of Spring the detail mapping for the maps doesn't work because when using the new beta it looks way more nice with what currently is called the "ATIhacks"...

So in the end it's just about some fance FX you can't turn on right now which are no big deal though...

So... is it ATI cards on Vista 64bit that are having problems? Anyone else running that combo who can comment?

Yep, and I'm using DNA 8.6 drivers. Game works alright, but I can't let the computer enter sleep mode as it wont reboot without crashing

Any ideas why these features aren't supported by these cards? Don't see how it's nvidia specific...

I have a Palit 4870, and now I'm pissed, I can run sauerbraten maxed out running at max fps 24/7, that's EVERY setting to max, AA, reflection, refraction, effects, everything, at 1600x1200, 200fps.

I run left4dead, same thing, 1600x1200, 140+fps
I can run gmod at 250+fps with no lag ever, 1600x1200.

I come into spring and what do I see? I am running at 28-30fps on max. I want an explanation. I have can't have pretty waves, and bump map water is a poor excuse for anything even remotely "nice".

Does your FPS drop much if you run Spring with AA cranked up?

I have an X800XL and it runs alright. I think I'd get a nVidia card if Spring was the only game I played though.

My fps is the same whether AA is on or not.

And why should an nvidia card have any benefit? My card has OpenGL 3 support for peet's sake.
