Mr. D, your third version has restored my will to live. The old radar truck was so hideously ugly that I could never bring myself to use it. Now it will be a centerpiece of my strategy.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
Then what are you worried about Tribulex?
Seriously though, the Radar truck is hardly ever used in games, even pro players hardly ever use them, so its really not that big of a deal.
The Jammer truck however does get used alot more often, so I'll have to put alot more work into that one.
I just want to get the radar truck made and done to complete the set.

So I think MR.D that you should go with the Truck you like. Since your not getting paid for making you models its important to be making models you like.
the first one.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
dont like it. it looks messy
Re: CORE Radar truck +1
They both look uninspired.
They lack something IMO.
Maybe leave it a lone for a while and try something else than come back to this with a fresh idea?
Their general forms looks lacking and sorta undefined.
Maybe stretch it up a bit, after all its a radar, make it higher and it will also give it a clearer form.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
I agree, it looks cool but something doesn't work.
The radar is fine but the main vehicule shape is strange. I think that the design has to be rethinked. Do you want it to look armored/easily breakable - slow/fast - high tech/basic ?

I like the shape, it is special.
Re: CORE Radar truck +1
Actually, this is the closest vehicle that I know of for comparison.
Its an earth mover vehicle which is articulated and something I just get stuck in my mind with the basic shape.
I almost got run over by one of these that was doing 35 mph at a recycling facility I went to a few years back, the operator wasn't watching where he was going and was coming straight at me and at the last moment turned away when he was about 10 feet from the truck I was in.. scared the crap out of me.. it was a towering monstrous looking vehicle and I'll never forget it.
Mostly I was just looking for a heavy offroad chase that can move fast. and this is what came to mind, so this is the reference vehicle for the last version of my remodel..

While your choice for taking that "thing" as reference is a quite unique one (I never saw such a thing yet) imo this joint/trailer concept of its back is not such a good idea. On the one hand you could argue that it's not enough "military style" but I also would look at the technical approach. Turning the back part when turning / driving a curve scriptwise could be "tricky" at its best. I'd have to recheck this but I don't know if there even exist enough commands to do that in a non-odd looking way (and I doubt if there would be a LUA coder to do the needed stuff). At the same time it's as you said: It gets rarely used at all so it would be quite some work you'll pretty much never see ingame...
That's why I'd make the chassis one piece and without that joint part it probably isn't going to look ... well "strange" ... as imo the rear part is what all the fuss is about...

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
All units act as though they turn on a plate in Spring, wheeled or not, most units function unrealistically, so I don't see the point off the debate.
The plan I have for it so far is to make an empty base object which the front and rear are connected to, then the front and rear can pivot equally like in the 2nd picture I posted of the top view of the unit.
In the case of the OTA ARM radar truck.. thats easy as pie, because it uses 2 parallel tracks like most modern tanks, the OTA CORE one is more of a trike configuration which by appearance alone would suggest it wouldn't be able to turn at all.

We have turninplace=0; now.MR.D wrote:All units act as though they turn on a plate in Spring, wheeled or not, most units function unrealistically, so I don't see the point off the debate.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
lurker, does that really change the units behavior in this way? if so, the pathing engine must be impossibly good, and should also be able to support things like backwards moving and unsquareness.
A unit has to turn in place somewhere in spring.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
Units can still turn in place if they're stopped, although they will attempt to keep moving at full speed. This does lead to some wierdness--if you tell a ship with this tag to move a short distance to one side it will start turning in circles.Tribulex wrote:lurker, does that really change the units behavior in this way? if so, the pathing engine must be impossibly good, and should also be able to support things like backwards moving and unsquareness.

Hey, I never said they pathed to turn at speed; they just do it anyway.

lol, so no pathing? all-terrain automatical coolness?lurker wrote:Hey, I never said they pathed to turn at speed; they just do it anyway.
Or am i missing the point. I aught to just test it myself.
Re: CORE Radar truck +1
ffs.
turninplace=0;
the units will just make curve while turning... like normal vehicles.
turninplace=1;
in the old setting they came to a big stop and would then turn and have to re-accellerate.
it isn't like you are using it tribulex but yeah the tag works.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
I have a rather radical proposal for both the radar and jammer trucks.
Real Life militaries use the same truck chassis for as many of their support units as possible to keep maintenance and production costs down. That is why so many variations on the HMMWV exist.
Why not pull the missile launcher off the back of the Slasher model and replace it with a rader? Or a jammer? I admit that it would reduce the visual variation, but it would add a small element of realism.

Re: CORE Radar truck +1
people cried deep rivers of tears when fang did it, I recommend avoiding that approach.
Re: CORE Radar truck +1
uh.. video games are all about realism..
I think that would be ok to clone units, if you were making a Desert Storm mod that has Nato/USA/RUssian forces, but not in TA..
In Ta every single unit was unique.
