Spring crashes whole system severely

Post by Blue_Falcon »

Hi,
Sometimes when I run Spring, it freezes the whole system. I try:
Ctrl-Alt-F1 (switch to tty1, planning to kill spring), doesn't work.
Ctrl-Alt-Bksp (Restart X server), doesn't react.
Ctrl-Alt-Printscreen/Sysrq, reisub (unmounts file systems and resets) works, but then I have to press the reset button so it actually resets.
  • Nothing unusual in infolog.txt
    I've tried $> spring &> info.txt, info.txt contains no useful data.
This happens mostly when playing online or against bots, but sometimes happens with test scripts too.

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance,

Blue Falcon

if you have geforce 8800, send yet another bug report to nvidia.
it's known bug and happens also with sauerbraten
Monitor goes in standby but you can still ssh to computer
removing nvidia kernel module with rmmod nvidia -f crashes

Alt+SysRQ+K probably won't be able to do anything useful in that case.

It does unmount the mounted drives (most of the time), then I reset using the button, and it doesn't need to do a check, so I presume that it works.

So I could theoretically SSH my computer and kill spring?

much more likely issue a soft reboot; the kernel is in an inconsistent state after a driver crash. actually, a hard reboot is the safest option.

if it's the same problem I've gotten, I ssh in and kill Xorg

I'll do that from now on, if it happens.

Does anyone actually know a long term solution though? I can't be playing online, and then suddenly I just drop out. It kind of ruins the game.

you can run the game windowed instead of fullscreen, at least then if it crashes it probably wont take the system down with it.

Best way is to run the game "windowed" and then tell your window manager to hide the window decorations and make it full screen. System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts->Window Management->Toggle Full Screen Mode

This makes everything work fine and doesn't take down the system when it fails. I have no idea why this is so.
