It would be nice if the background was simply the same as before when viewing the forums. I'm not sure If I dare but also would suggest bringing back the old logo/banner too as one of possible to pop up just for old times sake.

I could make the background image 1/27th of its current size while making it look identical

Maybe install the standard set of phpBB themes? I'm sure one of them would be a bit less jarring.
