An open letter to Devs and the SYs about the new version

Post by Slamoid »

This new version's client is buggy. Very buggy. Too buggy. I keep getting out-of-sync errors, I can't play LAN, and the limit-rank system is a just plain bad idea, leaving n00bs in the cold and creating a leetist subculture on a beta game. On top of this, new features are being added while not fixing current bugs, and on top of this there is still no AI available!!

On the good side, you guys are making great progress on an AMAZING free game, and an ASTOUNDING amount of things are fixed, but the demanding hardware requirments just to use somthing as simple as shadows and the unfriendly networking required to enjoy this great piece of marvelous software will, I'm afraid, murder much of a blossoming fanbase this game is starting to get.

Essentially, I guess I'm just saying you guys are coming a long way fast, but be careful to make sure you don't trip while you're running. And if you're a noob reading this post, stay around. This game is going to be great.

Well, i posted "rankings suck" also a while ago in another thread.

But its wrong. (i found that insight).

It really helps. Because i have seen more than one teamgame where the teammate didnt know that you have to space mines apart (5*5 mex array on castles), or thought metal comes from metal generators, or didnt know you can build assist, or asked questions like "how do i play this game", that for finding out total noobs it already has done its job (i never saw one of those not being rank1)

Its by no means a "real" kind of ranking, but at least it helps balancing teams...

I dissagree... I think rankings is a neat concept, but at the moment they are quite broken. We don't have the community right now to run exclusive games, and when we do there really should be a max and min ranking definable by hosts, as newbies coming and ruining high skill games will be just as big a problem as good players griefing newbie games will.

Also, I'd prefer not to move into the higher ranks soully for hours logged in game. If you suck like me 50 games doesn't nessicarily make you that much better a player, expecially if they mostly consist of getting beaten by lower ranked players. It might seem more politically correct to move people up after X ammout of games logged in every rank, but it really isn't the best working solution when it acctually comes to compeditive play. I prefer to play against people in the same skill level as me in a ranked game, not against the guy who ctrl-d'ed 300 times so that he is in the same rank level as me.

I'm not sure why anyone would be against a ranking system. I'm talking about a win/loss counter here, not the ranking that is based on the time you've spent in game...

I have had one crash, but its happened in other versions too! Its where when you type stuff it dosent show up, and when you order units around and they dont follow them. But no syncherrors occure though, witch is odd.

Check this thread about that:

You probably have been trying out some mod and and they're files are getting into conflict with XTA ones.

I had many many crashes when working on mods but they don't really count, I never had a problem with XTA or OTA which is great.

I had SOME wierd bugs though, nothing serious...

usually out of sync happens when people using "older" TAS + high resolution models (sub-directory Objects3D) ...

rename Objects3D to Objects3D.old and all will be fine
