I think it would be cool with an option that units left trails and kicked up a bit of dust as they moved (just a little bit) to make the ground come to life more.

What he means is dust tracks too, that doesn't happen in spring, you can probably emit smoke from ground units if they move but the smoke will be white, not the color of the dirt.

here's a request of my own: make the color of tracks and footprints changeable. If it can already be done, then I'd like to know how please...

footprint images are referenced in the unit's fbi file.

Footprints should be transparent and not be tainted by colour, hence the problems when brown dirt tracks appear on snow maps etc. Or tracks appearing on the metallic core prime surface!

there should be some tag or something on the ground that decides how strong are the footprints :-) like the move speed thing :-)

I thought they added an SMD tag that disabled footprints on a map?

yes, that's all good and well, but what about changing the color of the footprints on a map-by-map basis?

I think it would be cool if you could choose the color of your team, and pick your start position. Those would be good improvements too.

Why not just add a colour/strength variable to the each terrain type defined?

That one would work well. At least base the transparancy of the foot print on the grounds hardness. Hard ground should not have footprints, while soft ground should. But colour footprints would be very handy.

I would also like to see dust kicked up by units; the more units, the more dust is kicked up. It would be awesome if that dust floated up into the air for a little bit too, because it actually adds a strategic element, if you see dust rising into the air over the horizon.

Dust can really add a cool effect to massed units moving at once

... and again.
