As user I don't care whether it's dodgy drivers or not I just notice the thing freaking killed itself with Windows Update.
Plus MS fails to make any kind of investigation possible because safe mode blue screens too. And of course blue screens cause reboot immediately because of dumb default setting. Ugh.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
I find that one should never install drivers from windows update regardless of who it says there from or how correct they seem. It is the one major flaws of windows update across all versions of windows.
For example, there is almost always a driver being offered for a network card that when installed and rebooted causes the user to loose the ability to use that card, forcing a driver roll back.
I have a listing for a geforce nvidia driver that became outdated around this time last year despite having newer drivers installed.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Well, sadly enough, I can't afford to switch tbh. I like it. I like it a hell of a lot. But there are still too many driver/hardware issues and it's a damn shame.
What it comes down to is that ubuntu is gonna have to get all their shit in one sock to truly take the market over. For example, there is the WONDERFUL repo of freeware software, it would be an excellent idea to create a separate identical repo that housed drivers.
One of the things that really troubles me is the sound system. It works, and it works well, but I spent 2 or 3 hours getting it set up (thanks to the guys in the springlobby channel. You guys are awesome
). For the end user, they need to have the ability to not have to even need to touch it. If not for the guys in springlobby channel, I would have simply given up.
Clutter of user directory: I'm prolly gonna get hit with a lot of resistence here, but while I like the idea of the user directory it seems to get pretty cluttered fairly quickly. Now this is more a fault of the programs you install than the OS itself, but seeing clutter in there in some ways drives me up the wall. This is minor imo.
For ubuntu and linux in general to be truly viable, programs MUST have native support for it. WINE is nice, but it has a lot of drawbacks. Another thing is, no support for dx10 (yes, I'm very aware of why, but hear me out). I felt kinda like I was taking a step back. Under vista, dx10 quite literally doubled my framerates. I wish I could say the same for ogl. Once again, don't get me wrong, ogl is the shitm and not tethered to a single OS. It seems to me that if all apps were made using ogl as their renderers, then native support would be trivial. Amirite?
Anyway, It's a damn fine OS, but it does need some polish to be truly viable for everyday end users.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
well you actually only needed a single command to fix your sound

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
When you say more polish it sounds like 'running windows apps properly 99%'
thats not really polish when linux wasnt made for windows apps.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Not really muzic. Moreso I meant 1 click installs for programs, which some places have (wine for example).
The fact that all my sound devices are listed as CA106 doesn't help much, having to tell it which device is my actual sound output so the volume knobs work etc. It's small things like that that really impact the end user.
Yes Aegis, you are correct, but it took us around 2 hours to work it out. That's not very encouraging to an end user.
In the end it suffers in the same way MAC's do, and that is the fact that large game companies don't necessarily develop with linux in mind, which is a damn shame. Same goes for the high end productivity apps, like cubase etc etc (yes ardour is nice, but cubase is pretty much top notch). It's definitely on the right track as far as I'm concerned, but there is more to be done.
Another issue is the nvidia drivers. I should be able to do system>preferences>screen res and change it there. I shouldn't need to just forget about all the stuff built into the OS and only be able to use the actual gfx apps settings. I realize this is a fault of the gfx card companies, not the OS's fault.
Notice that very little of what I've said really finds fault of the OS, moreso just circumstances surrounding it.
My biggest problem is the fact that if I can't do everything in an OS, it ends p not really being worthwhile to use said OS. That's the problem here in a nutshell, and it's not exactly like the OS itself is at fault.

I haven't read this thread closely yet, but figured I should mention that I'm putting the Spring packages into Ubuntu proper so in 9.10 you'll be able to install them by just going to Applications->Add/Remove.
I'm also the Wine packager for Ubuntu.
